2019-2020 HRSA Nursing Corps Scholarship

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

I can't seem to find a thread on the latest round of Nurse Corps Applications, So I'll start. My initial point is more of me venting, but guess I'll ask - Should I even continue with my application? The new cycle and FAFSA wants us to use 2017 tax info, but in 2017, I was preparing for school and was employed full-time. Now that I'm collecting pennies and in dire need of assistance, it looks like my EFC is almost 8000. I can rarely work in reality. I'm really disheartened and confused as to why the FAFSA is set up like that.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I am a Nurse Corps Finalist. I also applied to the NHSC scholarship. My credit was checked twice, both through experian by CREDCO. Once at the end of july once this past week. Although I was hopeful to get the NHSC I would have had to decline the nurse corps and wait to see if I would have been offered the other. Which was a crazy idea.

My stats

I've been a pediatric nurse for 10 years. I'm starting my first year in a FNP master's program next week. I grew up in an under served community. My EFC is a 0. I never got married to my BF of 18+ years and it has benefited me in so many ways. My nursing school GPA was a 3.5 my other schooling was a 2.8 combined I barely made the 3.2 cut off to be accepted into my program. I took a lot of time writing my essays and I would call them "emotional" others might consider them "cheesy" but while writing them, I made it clear my dedication to giving back to my community. I know that my reference letters were written by people who really like me and took their time writing a nice letter.

I didn't list any community service. I talked about, inside my job, how I give back to my community through dedication to the undeserved and providing non-judgmental care.

I couldn't feel more like i hit the lottery but at the same time feel sad for others in the same situation as me that didn't get it.

Sending positive vibes to all of you.

I wonder if they will still consider you for the NHSC scholarship? It just seems like those in NP programs have extenuating circumstances that they should understand since one process is moving faster than the other.

As soon as I submitted the documents for the HRSA scholarship my status on the NHSC changed to "Declined Award"

Wow!!!! Well, at least you’re on there! Congrats. I’m a NHSC applicant still waiting for some sort of news.

Thank you and good lucK!

Reading back on pervious pages, a lot of people have had issues while being in final review. Looking back some people who were in final review got rejected ? They require two counter signatures and we won't hear back or see a change until the end of September.

@alextaylor17 I think there’s a possibility it might be sooner. If you also look at when people got their initial finalist notification emails it wasn’t until around mid August that people were getting the first round of notifications. Given that, I’m hopeful that they decided to make decisions earlier.

So are you guys saying that if your status say under final review it’s more than likely you were rejected ?

No. They award all the way until September. I called and verified this. I was told that emails go out at different times.

I figured because the date say September 30th. But I hope all goes well to everyone who’s waiting on this scholarship.

When I was reading on the 2018-2019 pages, some finalist didn't get the award because they "ran out of money" or simply were not selected. A few people said they had a glitch on their status as well. It went from under final review to under review and they were told that they ran out of funding. I pray this year this doesn't happen, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. If you want to take a look at the 2018-2019 HRSA thread, towards the end of September you can see a few problems finalist were up against.

Here's the link, they started to have rejection letters and issues from pages 55-60.

At this point, it’s causing me more anxiety to worry about all the what-if’s especially given that none of us actually know what the heck is going to happen.

We’ll know in a month and change thats for sure.
