2019-2020 HRSA Nursing Corps Scholarship

Updated:   Published

I can't seem to find a thread on the latest round of Nurse Corps Applications, So I'll start. My initial point is more of me venting, but guess I'll ask - Should I even continue with my application? The new cycle and FAFSA wants us to use 2017 tax info, but in 2017, I was preparing for school and was employed full-time. Now that I'm collecting pennies and in dire need of assistance, it looks like my EFC is almost 8000. I can rarely work in reality. I'm really disheartened and confused as to why the FAFSA is set up like that.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Everyone who was selected as a finalist when did you guys apply?

Page 6 of Program Guidance says, "The ORC is a single annual payment provided directly to each Nurse Corps SP participant to assist in covering the cost of books, clinical supplies/instruments, and uniforms. The payment is based on information obtained directly from the institution regarding the approximate cost of these items and is determined independently for participants."

When awarded (?!!!), I would contact your program to find out how much ORC is typically disbursed since cost of books and clinical supplies etc. may vary greatly across programs.

Yeah, I read that! I was more so wondering what people have gotten in the past. I wasn’t clear though lol. Thanks for the reply!!

Same here!

I thought I was in the same boat but I realized that they check your Equifax report. So if you go on the annual credit report website, you might be able to see it there.

For those who have received finalist emails, I’m wondering if your school is public or private ? I’m thinking cost of tuition is part of their decision making process. Not sure to what extent tho...

Nah I asked this question from them a while ago. They fund the most expensive schools to the least- from Yale and the likes down to state schools.

I thought this too at first, but I don’t believe this is a factor. They look at efc as the most important thing.

Okay here's my stats for Nurse Corps Scholarship

I'm a finalist with a 3.55 GPA and a EFC 5113.
Program is a ABSN
School tuition is about 30k including: tuition & fees, books, supplies, uniforms.. etc

My school is Louisiana State University and I'm out of state
My pervious degree was in Community Health and I have 3 years of experience working in underserved communities.

I am a Nurse Corps Finalist. I also applied to the NHSC scholarship. My credit was checked twice, both through experian by CREDCO. Once at the end of july once this past week. Although I was hopeful to get the NHSC I would have had to decline the nurse corps and wait to see if I would have been offered the other. Which was a crazy idea.

My stats

I've been a pediatric nurse for 10 years. I'm starting my first year in a FNP master's program next week. I grew up in an under served community. My EFC is a 0. I never got married to my BF of 18+ years and it has benefited me in so many ways. My nursing school GPA was a 3.5 my other schooling was a 2.8 combined I barely made the 3.2 cut off to be accepted into my program. I took a lot of time writing my essays and I would call them "emotional" others might consider them "cheesy" but while writing them, I made it clear my dedication to giving back to my community. I know that my reference letters were written by people who really like me and took their time writing a nice letter.

I didn't list any community service. I talked about, inside my job, how I give back to my community through dedication to the undeserved and providing non-judgmental care.

I couldn't feel more like i hit the lottery but at the same time feel sad for others in the same situation as me that didn't get it.

Sending positive vibes to all of you.
