HR wants to come in today

Nurses General Nursing

Published

:) I call Human Resources at a hospital that I interviewed at last week. I wanted to check what other dept.'s had open for nurses....since I only heard about one in particular and had an interview on the spot and had a week to go to hear anything. The lady recognized it was me from last week and asked me if I would come in today at 2:30, without asking why i just agreed. When I got there she informed I need to take urine drug test, so I do so. She didn't offer me the job but said she was almost thru with calling my references. Does this sound like I may get the job? I think so just wanted to see what you guys thought. It will be in ambulatory care-gastro.

If she's calling your references, it sounds like she's interested because she's taking the time to do this. Good luck.

The rules vary from state to state but generall a drug screen and a physical are not done prior to making a job offer. Of course the offer can be contingent on the drug screen results. So yes it is safe to assume this is an offer. This is based on the Rehab Act, ADA, or individual state drug-testing or handicap , discrimination laws.

It is not inappropriate to ask them this question directly.

Congrats!

She should have made you a CONDITIONALLY offered of a job before the drug test. Assuming you pass the drug test (and I'm certain you will) and your references are OK, you've got a job. If you don't then you've got a legal issue and grounds for a lawsuit.

Sounds odd to me but I suppose every place does it different. Sounds promising just was an odd way to get you in there.

Perhaps she assumed you knew that you had an offer. Stranger miscommunications have happened.

Ain't that the truth!

I have never had to take the urine drug test without being offered the job. Bet HR didn't know you weren't aware you were offered the job.

Congrats! Hope the job is everything you want it to be.

I don't think theyr're allowed to do drug testing UNLESS you have been hired or at least had an offer made. Sounds funny to me.

That's a lot of effort to go to if she didn't want to hire you. I bet it IS a cse of her assuming you knew you had an offer but something was miscommunicated somewhere. They shouldn't need to do a drug test before deciding to hire you. If you happened to fail the drug test they could always easily fire you after the fact.

I say you have it.

wow thanks guys! I've only had one other drug test and that was after I was hired. I never really looked into the laws regarding drug testing (when they can or can't). But I do remember her saying somewhere in the midst of the conversation, "when I offer you the job" but she still had to finish contacting the references. She said she'd let me know something Mon. or Tues and if not then for me to call her???? I'm a fairly new nurse and only had 2 jobs since school and one I had worked for the company before and I just got a call that I was hired and to start on Monday. I'm pretty happy about the job if I get it. But on the flip side, what makes me wonder is why they seem so sure I will accept the offer after all I did call her today to see what else was available besides the gastro opening.

OH and can anyone tell me this....heres the potential situation. I work right now for a screwy bunch. The office manager (mind you is a financial office manager, not a nurse or medical anything) receives a reference from a hospital about a physician's assistant working there. The PA admits that she has looked and applied for other jobs but she didn't know a reference paper was going to her current employer, our Office manager. Not to mention this was to go to the owner/DR. so & so. A few days later, she gives this PA 30day notice of her being let go and the PA has not even officially received the job. So I'm pretty ancy about them contacting my superviser cause she is in big cahoots with this office manager and I'm just waiting to see if I get a "we don't need you anymore" notice. I work for a small physician's office and we have a dictatorship...she even bosses the owner around and doesn't mind as long as he doesn't have to deal with other problems. This is all one reason I'm looking elsewhere but I don't want to lose my job unnecessarily cause it does give me good working hours and the work I do is good, there are just some things going on that are less than desirable and I'm looking to find some new challenges but still have my own requirements for a job which is day shift preferably in clinic, office or ambulatory care and those are not easy to find...except this latest offer. What are the legal implications for an employer to fire without any real reason?

Hey, Maia- how'd the new job thing go? Did you get it? Let us know- Laura

Hey Laura....I did get the job...just found out today!!! Now I have to figure out how to tell my coworkers/superviser. It's not like quiting a job a big hospital. Since there is just the 3 of us nurses and the doc, I just dread telling them. They have no idea. I guess I just have to give my notice. Wish me luck.
