How to study for NCLEX on F1 visa

Published

Hi

I'm new here.I graduated from nursing school outside US. I'm here on F1 visa.I started with ESL programs, than I got pregnat and have baby.My baby needs a lot of care and attention because was born premature.I applied to CGFNS and I know that this proces will take very long time.I need to maintain my status ,so I have to be in school.I took Kaplan because they have NCLEX-RN courses preparation for international nurses and also they reconize F1 visa.My program will ends in September and I have to look for another school where I can study for NCLEX,but I have problem to find.I'm living in NYC.I'm so upset and sad, please maybe you have any advise for me because I'm sitting and crying.:crying2: Thank you very much to all of you for any sugestions.

How are you maintaining your F1 visa? You need to maintain full time schooling for F1 unless you are using OPT and that needs to be applied for several months before you graduate. Once you have passed NCLEX how are you planning on staying in the US and working?

I can't see how Kaplan meets the grade for NCLEX prep because requirement of F1 is full time student.

I will enroll in RN to BSN if i were you or BSN to MSN.I will focus on passing first before worrying about status.Try talking to people you know about your status instead of talking to strangers about it on cyber.Goodluck!

You definitely need to get into full time school if you intend to stay here. You can find much discussion about the requirements for visas, etc. in the international forum.

I don't understand how you one could keep his/her F1 status by enrolling in a review course. If you intend to stay here, I would suggest that you focus on maintaining your status. If you become out of status, even if you passed your NCLEX, you will not be able to work as an RN here. I would suggest that you enroll for another course or a masteral degree to maintain your status. If you could do this while studying, that would be better.

Thanks for answer. It is hard for me to maintain the status,I have to do 22 hours study by week .Those requirements has Kaplan.I was thinking to go to nursing school ,but I did this already in my country.I would like to work in US,in order to do this I can't become ilegal.

Even if you get an F1 extension, you can't say here indefinitely and work here. As an F1 visa holder, you will be permitted to work part time according to the number of credits you have completed, for a limited number of hours a week. You must work a part time job related to the course you are taking. You cannot drop a subject or be absent because you will be reported to the USCIS if you do this. I'm not sure where the US completion of BSN would take you because right now, there are no visas available for foreign RNs- whether you are US trained or not. All those employers who are telling you that they will sponsor you as an RN and you must stay here now are fake. They cannot be above the law. There may be other ways, but you will never be sponsored as an RN for now. I have zillions of friends who have overstayed because they were fooled into believing that their papers will be fixed. Now they are out of status. No RN licensed could save you from being out of status.

I would suggest that you talk to an immigration lawyer and discuss your options on staying here. However, let me remind you that there are currently a lot of US-trained RNs who are having troubles finding a job for the reason that most employers are looking for seasoned RNs. If you are a new foreign-trained RN/US-trained but on an F1 visa and you need a sponsor to stay here, and there are a couple of new US-trained RNs with authorization to legally work here, and you are all applying for a job, who do you think these employers will hire?

If you want to stay here, you have to think about long term plans. Seek advise from a reputable immigration lawyer.

Do not let your status lapse and I really can't see how Kaplan course meets F1 requirements.

As mentioned if applying for immigrant visa you will be affected by retrogression and currently looking at several years wait, you can not change your status and work whilst waiting.

status comes first before you work on being an RN here. if you pass your nclex and you become illegal, that's a waste of effort. now if you pass your nclex and you can't give the BRN an ssn, your license will expire in 2 years and all of your files will be deleted, you will have to start from scratch as in passing an application form and all the other requirements to BRN. not to discourage you, but are you aware that there are hundreds of new grad USA-trained RN's who can't get a job right now? between a foreign-trained RN and a US-trained RN who both just passed the NCLEX, who do you think will employers hire? Not to mention that employers need to sponsor a foreign-trained RN for an immigrant visa. Not trying to discourage you, but I want you to be fully aware of this.

I have more than 15 friends all Filipinos who came here on a tourist visa, made a status change into student's visa, passed their NCLEX in the hope that when they get their RN license, they could easily work as an RN here. Not the case. Some of them realized that things would have been better if they waited for the retrogression to clear up in the Philippines than to stress themselves out and pay for thousands being a student just to maintain their status will waiting in vain to get an employer to hire them as an RN, sponsoring them the get a green card.

I've never heard of any kind of NCLEX prep program that could, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered full-time study.
