How soon to shower?

One of my friends (also an OB nurse) daughter-in-law delivered at a nearby hospital and we were surprised that they allowed the new mom to get out of bed immediately after delivery and sent her into the shower. We generally assist new moms to the BR a couple of times and wait a few hours before letting them shower. What are others doing?

I showered about 5hrs after my son was born. I wanted to shower sooner, but again, wasn't allowed.

I think Moms should be allowed to shower as soon as they want, as long as the epi has worn off and they are steady.

I did within an hour but that was in 82 after natural childbirth. That is why I went natural so I could do that.

depends on the patient. i help the up the first time if all goes well and bleeding is fine they can shower . i usually encourage them to have some body with them just incase.

with our last baby wife showered 1/2 hour after birth, we went home 4 hours later.

so you see it really depends on the patient and the situation:)

We help up to the bathroom the first time but usually the women don't shower until 4 hours after delivery when they are moved to their postpartum rooms. Unfortanely we are behind the times and don't have LDRP's.

I work two places; one using LDRP model and one only LDR. I MUCH prefer LDRP...seems so wasteful to have to use two complete rooms and all the equipment that go with it for ONE patient! I HATE having to relocate those poor girls so soon after delivery.

I was in the shower throughout my labor and when I was finally told I HAD to come out, I was fully dilated. I delivered my son and as soon as I was stitched up and VS were checked, I went back to the shower.

I never knew how good warm water could feel until that day!

LDRP do have some benefits, but some draw backs also. sometimes it makes for an interesting mix of patients and staffing.

and what about the screamer that delivers at midnite or so, wake the others up:)

I am getting ready to go work in a lrdp after years in a different setting..We do have birthing rooms at the current facility,and there is something to be said for transferring moms to pp to make way for new people. The whole idea of this new venture both intrigues and scares me....Well, I will see for myself......

Ever notice for the first shower after delivery, you might as well be taking the shower with the pt...Everyone cracks up, but I get in there with them, both to assess them and to help them....Whenever my patients shower, it is a big joke around delivery that I will be nearly as soaked as she is....

we were supposed to start construction on converting to LDRP but the money was taken from us to help with the possible upcoming war Military hospitals are short on funds now.

pERSONALLY i HAVE WISHED THAT THEY WOULD MAKE A MANDATORY SHOWER A PART OF THE L&D ADMISSION................................
