How did you pay for nursing school?

Published

I have always wondered what amount of nurses paid for their education through financial aid, student loans, or on their own.

The main reason for this thread is to provide information for people who cant afford expensive tuition. I recieved pell grants, student loans and worked part time to get myself through nusing school. Alot of people arent aware of the resources that are availible. I want to see the percentages of nurses who recieved financial aid to get through school

Please share how you paid for nursing school. Give any links or resources that you may have. Thanks!

My parents paid for my RN nursing school. Did not have to pay them back. I paid for my LPN school though.

I worked every free moment while in BSN school, that combined with help from parents, and 16k worth of private loans (school didn't accept federal loans.) NOW I work FT and do NNP school PT. My employer is paying a minimum of $10,000/yr toward school with the stipulation that I stay employed for 6 months after each payment. I will hopefully get through debt free....

I was fortunate enough to get a free ride courtesy of Pell and a local goverment program. I had to take $3000.oo loan for my last semester because the transition phase was just too hard to do while I was working as a bartender. I consider myself very fortunate.

Got a loan from a local hospital for books and tuition for my ADN , the money kept coming as long as my grades were As and Bs. Had 3 small children and a poorly contributing husband at the time. Worked part time. Took me 5 years to pay it back. Best thing I ever did, by the Grace of God alone. Was obligated to work for that hospital for 2 years.

Got my BSN tuition fully paid by the next hospital, no loan involved. Again, obligated to work for two years. I spent over 27 years at that hospital. Went back to work there prn after I retired.

I am in my first semester. I am receiving $4500/ year from financial aid, $10,000 a year from government loans and a ton more from private student loans. I decided not to work while I was in school. I felt it was more important for my little ones to see me and have more study time. It's scary living off of loans and having no income. My husband is in school too, so he doesn't bring anything in. But it's worth it, I think. You can only TRY to support a family of 5 on minimum wage for so long before you realize that it doesn't work!

But truly, this is my dream. I'd pay 3 times the amount if I had too!

Student loan plus I worked full time to pay living expenses and some of my books/school costs. I worked in a hospital and they had tuition reimbursement up to 500 dollars a semester for good grades and I took advantage of that to pay for some of my books and supplies. I paid off my loan four years ago. It was hard but worth it....

30K+ in student loans..........that was my only option. I went the private route though and got in right away.

By the way, I too got asked for my transcripts when job hunting.

I paid for the ADN with my Veterans Education fund (VEAP) and Pell grants; I actually made money but this was 1992 and I was married and had a baby- the rules are not the same now.

I paid for the BSN the old fashioned way- I borrowed it from Uncle Sam, subsidized and unsubed. 1997

I am still paying for the MSN loan- all unsubed thank to a change in the rules and an increase in my earning tax bracket. 2006

Now my daughter who is single with no dependents cant even fill out a FAFSA without my tax/income information. I would never have gotten any kind of government loan with those kind of rules- I would not have had access to my parents' information.

Specializes in ER; HBOT- lots others.

I was injured in the Army and they are paying for all of my schooling for the rest of my life. See, they do take care of some ppl, but only if you fight your butt off for it! This is the only reason i have ever thought of going for my NP. Now, i just wanna get each semester over, cant think that far into the future!

Loans out the wazoo, about $23,000...although I'm told as long as I work as a nurse I can have about $3,000 of that forgiven. I also got some scholarships and worked various jobs. I still never had very much money though, so it was nice once I finally started getting the RN pay :)

Question...If I ever go back to school full time do my loans defer even after I've started paying them?

I believe so yes. I stopped going to school and they said I had to start paying.... I hurried up and re-enrolled in a full load. Sent them my enrollment and haven't heard from them since...

36,000 scholarship

22,000 federal grant

7,000 loans

Parents did the rest

Grad school is gonna suck , no more help from mom and dad :(
