How much do you like nursing on a scale of 1 to 10?

And why?

Specializes in Critical Care.

6.234/10

I don't dislike nursing, but that isn't to say I'm head over heels either. However, I'm good at what I do.

I've seen the good and the bad. 14 yrs worth, now. I took the paper boards. These days, that qualifies me as a true veteran of nursing.

I don't mind going to work, to the extent that I MUST work. Nursing is as good a job as any. It pays the bills.

Sometimes, it even surprises me.

Hi

After 40+ years----9/10, most days

The paper work & politics---5/10

Specializes in Age care and Pallative care.

I love nursing so its a 7-10.........depending on the shift Im working. Nursing is terrific but nurses can sometimes let you down.

I work full time in age care, pallative care and find it extremely demanding, depressing but always rewarding. People in our care are characters with a wide range of conditions, personalities and behaviours. I became an assistant in nursing because I wanted a career change. I am currently up-grading my skills to be better informed and broaden my knowledge on general nursing.............I will never regret the change and hope to find other nurses with the same ideals.

first year of nursing it was 1

2nd year of nursing it was 5

3rd year of nursing it was 10+

now in 4th year i will say 1-

sorry but that is how i feel

I would give it a 7. The only career I would give a 10 is retirement.

10, but then I find nursing to be my most productive environment for personal spiritual development. Maybe that also means the level of challenge is high, 'cause there's no development without challenge. Yeah, it's probably the most challenging environment I've been in. Also the most rewarding.

Depends on the day really. To echo many of the other posters, I despise the stupid things that take me away from providing EXCELLENT patient care (baby-sitting other depts, ridiculous volume of paperwork, annoying family members, etc.). However, knowing that I've given mental and physical comfort to my patients and helped to solve some of their problems that have been overlooked during their stay...now those are the things that keep me coming back (well, and the paycheck )...and yes, all of this coming from a med-surg nurse! Overall...a 6. THere truly are some days I just want to walk out and never look back, but those days are when I am feeling just overwhelmed, like there is no break in sight (Hmmm, will I be able to get a lunch today? or fighting off the need to void for the fifth time that day).

I'd say it depends on the day. Usually a 9 but if you ask me after one of those shifts from H... then it would probably be a 7. Has never been low enough to make me think about quitting, just low enough that I knew I needed a vacation.

10/10, but I am a new nurse, and I am passionate about the area I work in, Emergency. There is something oddly invigorating about helping to dance the fragile line between life and death that overshadows the more ordinary and exhausting aspects of emergency nursing for me.

What makes it that high of a rating?

* I need to use my gut feeling and my brain every single second

* Its challenging. I love that since I am a very competative person

* Its always different. I can't come to work and say I know whats going to happen, because there is no pattern to chaos.

* I really do feel as if I am making a difference (at least most of the time).

* I am never bored at work.

* I get to help people and get paid for it too, that brings me joy

* I like only having to work 3 days a week.

* I like the option being able to specialize in other nursing areas and the flexibilty of being able to work anywhere in the US if I so chose.

Ok, now here are some aspects of nursing I don't like. I need to list these so you guys won't think I'm just a nieve newbie.

* Complaining coworkers. I Know one finds these everywhere, but everytime I work with one or some it really brings down my moral. So your life sucks and you have to work, deal with it.

*Not being respected. Nurses aren't always very respected by the general public. While that does discourage me, it also motivates to be very educated and professional when interacting with every single one of my patients. I refuse to allow other medical professionals to debase me either.

*Getting mandated. I think this is unsafe. However this is changing is some states so hopefully mine will be next.

All of these points aside,I am also working on furthering my career already. I am going to go to school part time again starting in the fall. I need to have other Nursing options open because I get bored easily so I need to be able to have other doors open for and when that time comes.

I have to say 10.Ive been in the medical field for 30 years, too.I like to help people,I like the flexibility, autonomy, the pride that comes with saying "Im a Nurse"I love learning and knowing medical issues and the physiology of diseases and disordersI love assessments and how you can visibly see certain syndromes just by thier appearances, which a non nurse wouldnt know.I love the security of knowing Ill always have a good paying job.Just to name a few.

When I started nursing school, I honestly didn't like the idea of nursing. Weird, huh? But that's my personality--I learned long ago that I have to take what seem to be irrational leaps to get anywhere in life. So, I took my love of working with people and blended it with my love of human biology, and decided to become a nurse.

So, during my clinicals as a student, I would have said, on a scale from 1-10, a generous 2. I did NOT like the feeling of nursing responsibility combined with the feeling that I had no idea what I was doing.

Now that I've been working as a nurse for a few short months, I'll say 7-8. That's a very good score for me. I recognize that the profession as a whole has some issues--historically and currently. (for details, see threads on allnurses.com :)

But it's a very rewarding career, nonetheless. I was emptying my patient's foley the other day, and he let loose a great fart. I said "good for you," (and, of course, genuinely meant it since it was his first since surgery), and he looked at me with a smile and said "I can tell you really love what you do."

He said it!

10/10 here!

i like the variety...both in the people i encounter and the illnesses i help them deal with.

i like making that connection with people...knowing that they trust me enough to share the intimate details of their life.

i like knowing that if i ever tire of the area i am working in, there are plenty of other areas to try.

i like knowing that i make a difference.
