Hello all you nurses :)
okay, i'm a nursing student in my second semester of the lpn program... i just have a simple question that i would like to know.. How Much Did You Retain In Nursing School, honestly?

Honestly, not nearly as much as I would have liked. The basics, yes, they're definitely there, but most of your learning comes from on the job. I found that, as I started to specialize in one area I used those skills more, and other skills less. I'd love to take an overall refresher course. However, you'll find that, once in a while, a nugget pops in to your head and you'll say "where did that come from" and guess what? The pieces come together.
Good luck and hang in there!

I am almost done with my LPN program and there is a lot that doesn't stick with you. But somedays you will amaze yourself with how much you know and have retained!

I want to say very little. (It will be 2 years in May) But recently I have found that
when a subject matter comes up I am able to rattle info off. It may not be complete but I was very surprised at what I was able to pull out of my head.
Can't say how much I retained but know there at bits of info hiding in there I did not know I had.

I just finished with the LVN program and I must say, not that much has been
retrained. Some may be in there somewhere, but most of the things I
remember/know for sure, I learnt them through clinical experience.
I strongly suggest you ask ask ask. And if the nurses can show it to you, even better. And if they let you do it, MUCH BETTER!!!

I reteined a lot of the stuff i use regularly. Maternity - not so much - but trauma, surgical, etc - yes. It's true - you don't use it, you lose it.

I find I have a problem remembering diseases. I sometimes will get admissions with diseases that we dont encounter very often and I cant remember what the disease is. And I learned that everyone I work with has the same problem. I used to be able to read EKG's in school, but I dont work on a Tele floor and now I can NOT interpret an EKG at all. But as far as skills and basics, it will stick with you. And I agree that sometimes I will rattle stuff off that I had no clue I remembered.
