I am just curious. I am 37 and will be taking my last pre-req in January for the nursing program at my local community college. I have noticed many people here are over 30, so I wanted to just blurt out the question. How many of us 30 somethings are making a career change into Nursing?
I'm 37 and making a career change, but I still work in an office for now.
My hand is up!
I am 39 years old, but will be 40 before I can start the core program. I've been working on the nursing program for about a year and a half. First, I took the CNA certification in the spring of 2006. Then Chemistry in fall 2006. Spring 2007 was Gen A&P, summer was Developmental Psych. This fall, I'm taking Adv A&P. Will take Microbiology in the spring of 2008. No classes for summer!!!! ... unless I decide to take med term or maybe even a Spanish class. I'm scheduled to start the core program in fall 2008 at one of two schools where I've been accepted.
My children are all grown. My youngest is a senior in HS this year. She just received her acceptance letter to college yesterday! She did the happy dance! :monkeydance: Looks like we'll be starting college together!
I am 39 and I am getting ready to start an LPN program in December 07. This will be a second career for me since I have worked in human resources and accounting for the last 8 years. When I get done with the LPN I will go straight into the last year of the RN course at my school. So hopefully I will be done by the time I am 42? lol maybe 43
Hi everyone!! I turned 32 in June, married to a MD,and have a daughter not quite 9 yrs old. Back in 02 I was going to school for Ultarsound, then my husband decided he wanted to open up a practice in NC, so I had to change my major after 42 hours, all A's but 3 B's, to Surg Tech, after 20 hours and all A's, the practice was a bust, we move closer to home and tried again for a new practice, and I went back to Ultrasound school but then decided it wasn't what I wanted in a career, the hubby and I finally ended up back where we started, home, but the private practice we have here is booming, and I am now finishing up on the last two classes befor I enter the Summer 08 for LPN. Then I will bridge to RN, then finish the last year of Surg Tech and hopefully work in OB or work for some plastic Surgen!! I am actually getting ready to take the PSB exam in a week, so Im studying super hard!!
Super glad to be here!!!

I just turned 30 this year, so I'll be 31 when I start my 18 month BSN program in July. I'm currently taking A&P I and PHysics (dropped Organic Chem when I decided I want to be a NP, not an MD!). I should be able to start a DNP program in July of '10 and be done when I'm 36.
I have 2 kids - 3 years and 8 months and I don't plan on any more. DH is an air pollution meteorologist.
I am 36, anxiously awaiting the letter for January 08 start of my ADN. I sold Real Estate for 9 years until the bottom fell out of the market here in MI. I've been married for 15 years and have two boys, 13 & 11. I am finishing the last of my co-reqs right now. I hope to go on to become a CRNA, I have a fond fascination with surgery, especially plastics. Good luck to all on your journey!!
Isn't 30 the new 20? I am 33 and I started my pre-reqs for an ADN program at 31. I don't think I would want it any other way! I sowed my wild oats and worked the "kinks" out during my 20's, and now I have so much more patience and appreciation for my education...more than I would have had at 23. It's been a long, stressful and interesting adventure! Now, I sit here waiting patiently (if sitting on top of the mailbox is patient!!!) to hear back from the nursing program to see if I have been accepted...I heard through the grapevine that the letters went out tuesday(10-16-07). If I am, then I have to take the teas test... I am nervous about that...if anyone has taken it recently and has any pointers, I would love to hear from you!
If I can do it, anyone can. Believe me, I cried in the bathroom every evening before algebra class, before every anatomy exam and physiology just bored me to tears... I have very supportive children (3) & a boyfriend, they cheer me on daily...they never complain when I can't join them for some family because my nose is buried in a book or I am doing research on the computer. I began my college career at the very bottom, I had to take pre-reqs in order to take pre-reqs! I have attended school continuously for 8 semesters, (spring, summer, winter and fall) But, I made a check list when I started and it felt so cool to finally see the list of classes get shorter and shorter.
Good luck to everyone, you CAN do it!
Hi;
I am 37 yrs young and I am pursuing my second career-which was really my first career choice put on hold due to life. I was laid off by my employer 2 mos ago -I am a mortgage underwriter in the business for 15 yrs and with the way the economy is the mortgage industry is dry...no jobs. So after re-assessing my life-I have decided to finish my college education. I am very nervous -I have 3 children 12, 11, and 8. My 8 yr old has apserger syndrome (higher functioning autism) and my marriage is on the rocks. I on the other hand am very excited-I have 37 credits and need to take a few more pre-req's- A&P 1 & 2 w/lab and microbio to apply for my ADN or transfer to University for my BSN w/ addt'l pre-req's. I don't know how any of you do it-raising a family and studying. I know it will be a challenge but if anybody has any advice please feel free to give it. This life change and career change thing can get really scary.
You 30 something people make me feel old, I just turned 50 in September. I too am taking only 1 class per semester, moving like a snail, at a constant slow steady pace. As long as I have energy and health in my bones I will continue. This semester I have A&P I, which I find extremely challenging; when I survive this class I'll only have 2 pre-reqs left, A&P II and Microbiology, then I'll be ready for nursing school. Right now I work full time as a 911 operator on the midnight shift in a large metropolitan area, so when I earn my nursing degree I plan to stay in the same field and become a Telephone Triage Nurse.
Im 33 & have been working in healthcare for 5 1/2 years.
Ive thought about becoming a Nurse for at least 3 years now, but never commited myself. I have two small children, so the scheduling of classes should be interesting?
I have some Pre-reqs to finish up this spring & am praying for a FALL 2008 admission to Nursing?
Im nervous & excited - Hoping I can juggle everything?

I'm 37, married mom of 1 child, full time job, chipping away at my pre reqs, going to try to get into either a BSN or ADN, whichever program accepts me first. I'm at the stage where I can only take one class at a time because they all build on each other, so it's a slow go. I'm taking A&P 1 right now, I have A&P 2, Microbiology, Statistics, and the Chemistry's to go before applying to a program
I feel like I'm getting a REALLY late start!
