How many times were you rejected before getting into nursing school?

Published

Hello all-

I was rejected by 5 schools and am feeling pretty bummed out about it. I'd like to know what your experiences were in this. How many times were you rejected before getting into nursing school?

I'd really like to hear from students who've had exceptional circumstances getting into nursing school.

For those who've gotten in the first try, please reserve your posts for another discussion. I'd really like to hear from those who've really persevered to reach their goals.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSIGHT!

Hello-

I know this topic may get moved to the pre-nursing student section, but I really wanted to reach out to current nursing students.

How many times were you rejected before getting accepted into nursing school?

I'd really love to hear from those who've had unusual circumstances or from those who persevered through tough times to get into school. (i.e. raising kids, getting wait listed several times, etc.)

For those who were accepted the first time around, please hold on to your responses! :)

I didn't get into the 1st school I applied to and I was upset about it. I 2nd guessed myself but I kept trying. I tried another local community college and after missing their TEAS requirement by 2 points I really had doubts. I applied to the community college where I started my pre-requisites and got in. I had also considered the accelerated BSN program where I live but I would have to take around 5 more classes just to get into the upper division. I finally got accepted into nursing school, a community college for an associate degree. I'm in my 2nd semester. I'm doing well now but really struggled my 1st semester.

Stay string and if this is what you want don't give up and do what it takes to make it through!!!!!

GOOD LUCK

I first applied for nursing school when I was in college. I was rejected three times. One time because I had a low GPA adn the others for reason I do not know. Trust me I was crushed. I even questioned if nursing school was for me.

I transferred to a different college and graduated magna cum laude and other honors in May of last year with a BA in history . I just got into a competitive accelerated BSN program that is close to me. I am so happy. I have been working towards the goal of getting into nursing school for years. This dream required me to take classes over and basically do the best I could ( I even took extra classes). I was also massively ill during most of my undergrad ( had a stroke, was misdiagnosed with epilepsy, also had to pay for school myself...but I did it!). I actually became a better student and learned better study habits. However, the first part of the journey is over and the really hard part begins in Fall.

I know how it feels to be rejected however keep trying. If it means you have to take classes over then do so. IF it means looking at other programs that you would never have thought of or even moving ( as long as you are able) then do so. You can get in and you will. Trust me one you get an acceptance letter it will be all the more sweeter.

Good luck

I jut received my first rejection letter it wasnt because i didnt have the grades the nursing school did not do academic forgiveness and calculated the classes i took in 2006 when i first got out high school with the gpa i have now. Lets say i was pretty bummed out and felt i let myself down. I did speak with admission committee and she informed me i was only 1pt from being accepted. She also encouraged me to reapply in the fall and good luck. I am still finishing up my pre reqs and this just encouraged me to work harder than ever. I know the hard work will pay off and the positive thing is i am able to take patho in the fall as a full semester class before nursing school if i get accepted in the spring. They do encourage their prospective student to take this because you do better in clincials and nursing school. I would just keep trying because it gives you the ambition and drive to work harder than ever. Trust me i know this is my first one but it hurt because i worked so hard to bring my gpa up to 3.0 when i returned college after miltary in 2010 and the grades i have i will have 3.5 gpa cumm if i keep it up. Believe in yourself and strive for greatness :) good luck and look at it as a way to prove to yourself or anyone you can get in!!!

@AccelBSN12 Oh my gosh. You really persevered! I really shouldn't be complaining anymore. Do you think that the rejection helped you become a better student?

I applied to two different nursing schools for 8 consecutive fall/spring semesters before I was accepted. Turns out that I was accepted to both at the same time. Those two schools were basically the only possible options for me, for a number of reasons. I was a "qualified applicant" at those 2 schools each semester I applied. Everything must have simply lined up right because I was selected simultaneously at each program. Another semester or two and I would have been good to go for the BSN program at the local University as they (finally) opened the University back up to 2nd Bachelor's students.

All told, I was rejected 13 times out of 15 applications to those schools total... for clarification.

akulahawk WOW 8 semesters and 13 applications! You are so strong for hanging in there. 8 consecutive semesters....how many years is that?

boricuarn23 I am in the same boat. What branch did you serve? I was a Marine with a Bachelor's degree. I graduated in my first degree with a 2.50 GPA. I worked my gluteals off to bring it up to a cumulative 3.7. I had an awesome job working as a journalist, volunteered at the hospital for a year, worked as a nurse's aide and these schools still didn't want me! Needless to say, I wanted to use my rejection letters as target practice with an M-16. (Although, I'd probably miss because I suck at shooting and proudly sported my "Marksman" badge during my entire military career. LOL!)

@ topaz1100 THanks for sharing! Yes, it is quite frustrating to know that I didn't get in by mere points. You mentioned that you had doubts after receiving your rejection letter. What made you strive on?

All told, that is 4 years and 3.5 years, respectively, for a total of 15 applications.

Oh, and don't forget the basics... good sight alignment, obtain good sight picture, (keep) focus on that front sight, and preesssss... BANG. That's the secret to good marksmanship.

@ Tiffanyle..... I didn't think I could get in anywhere and I assumed my rejection was partly/mostly because of my past record which included a DWI.... from 10 years ago. So in a way I thought every school would "reject" me. However, I felt like I needed to just continue to apply and some school somewhere would have to accept me. I started to ask before applying about my situation and most advisors said it could be an issue but then again it might not be.

I decided to give myself a chance, stop condemning myself, and keep applying.... it worked!

Was wondering if I could have some advice. Need 2 more classes before applying to BSN program. Micro and Dev Psych. Have summer to do them, then can apply for next spring. If I wait and take them in the fall, I can not apply until next Sept 2014. I am a mature student and do not want to waste any more time, but also working PT.
