How many hours is your shift?

Published

Just curious as to how many hours your normal shift is/was in psych. Where I work, we have 8 hour shifts, though some people will work 16 hours (sometimes by choice, other times by mandation). They also have 8 hour shifts where I did my practicum.

Are 8 hour shifts common in psych?

We have 8's but some of the adult units have 12's. Our unit is a bunch of younger-ish nurses who are trying to come up with a way to switch many of us to 12's. We can do 16's either voluntarily or not.

The general scheduling for my unit is 2-8s and 2-12s to equal 40 hours.

Morning shifts are 8, evening also 8 and night shifts are 11

We were scheduled for 8s. Unless there was a call off and usually the nurses would work it out so that 2 people did 12s to cover.

A few times nurses were forced to work doubles, i.e. 16s, but that was rare.

The freestanding psychiatric hospital where I once worked was utilizing 8-hour shifts for scheduling (7 to 3pm, 3 to 11pm and 11 to 7am). Even though I only worked there for six months, the 8-hour shifts caused me to feel as if I was at work all the time.

Being forced to work a double is not rare where I work. It's usually not the nurses who are forced to stay, but the techs. I've volunteered to do doubles but have yet to be forced to do so. It'll happen though. It causes a lot of turn around, that's for sure. Hard to plan for things when you don't know when you'll get to go home.

In my hospital we work 12 hour swing shifts. Two days of 12 hour shifts one week and five days of 12 hour shifts the next. I dread the five day work weeks - it's almost inhuman to make someone work five 12 hour shifts in one week - truly sucks.

24 hours one week and 60 the next??? That is crazy!! Do you get paid for overtime the week you work 60 hours?

I work in military medicine, sadly this is the norm. All military nurses who work at a Naval Hospital work these hours :-(

I didn't start my new job yet but it will be three 12s.

8 hours, but we tend to work voluntary doubles. We can be mandated for 16, and then asked to stay for 20 hours.
