I feel like I have a lot of Diabetic students. I have 4 Type 1 DM and 3 Type 2 DM... All of these require insulin. I have 2 additional Type 2 who take oral medications at home...

I have none this year in my 9th grade campus of 1100. Next year, I will have 4 T1D, with one being Life Skills, and 2 T2D who are both managed at home.

I have three T1Ds. One is a handful, not because of his management of his diabetes, but because he and his friends all come in together before lunch, and they are loud, and always ask a million questions. His numbers are always mid-100s, though, and he does his own injections, I just keep track of his numbers and carbs/insulin. One is a sweet kid, with an overbearing mom (who I now get along with, but still, she's high-maintanence), and one kid who is independent, but brittle, so spends a lot of time in my office.

i have 1 right now, but i have had as many as 5. i have 2 type 2, but despite multiple requests haven't gotten any documentation on them so no care for them either.

Would you guys mind sharing the documentation you do for your diabetics? I do 3 different kinds of documentation because that is how it was before I was hired. The health records for my diabetics are so thick. I am wondering about how long to keep our daily logs for. Any information is appreciated!

I document in our electronic record their glucose level, carb count (if necessary), and dose of insulin. Of course if low or high I document specific interventions per the diabetic management plan from the doc. I do not keep paper logs.

I use blueloop for my T1D kids and a few other kids (asthma, daily cath or tube feed)
This doesn't count as my official documentation (we have an EMR system) but it's so worth the extra few minutes.
When I enter a BG check and any interventions the parents get a notification via email or text. I don't have to text. I don't have to call. They stay up to date on what is happening and they have a handy log they can look over or even take to the Dr with them.
MUY BUENO!

You sign up and you get a code. You give parents the info and they have to sign up for it and enter their child's info and then they connect to you via your code. I don't use it for all the asthma kids just the ones with frequent issues. For procedures they end up in the "other" category so it's wide open and just type in a quick note.

Blueloop sounds amazing. I will definitely be checking that out. We have Infinite Campus for our records and I guess I never though about doing the documentation in it since they didn't do that before me. ? I go into the classroom for 3 out of 4 of my diabetics. I have an ipad I could carry with me. Do you guys go into the classrooms at all or do they always come to you?

I am high school, so I have several that are completely independent in their care and only come to me for highs/lows. The others all see me in my office for their daily care, and I observe. I don't think I would do it in the classroom, personally, but you understand the dynamics of your school in a way that I don't. I feel like it would infringe on their privacy a little too much when I have a perfectly acceptable, private space for them to do so here.

I do it per parent and student request so they aren't missing out on instruction time. They all have pumps so we wouldn't do any injections in the classroom. It works out very well for them and I enjoy getting out and about!

Well that works out well then! I would love to get off of my island a little more, actually. I only have one student on a pump and since he's independent, he's a breeze, just stops by to tell me his numbers.

Majority of the time the kids come to me. If they are complaining of not feeling well, feeling low - the teacher is supposed to send a buddy to walk with them to my office. Routine checks - lunch, snack etc - the student will come alone to my office.

I have 2 with Dexcom that I am able to monitor with clinic ipad. If I get alarms or randomly notice that numbers are going down I will either call the classroom to tell teacher to send them to me with a buddy, tell teacher to have them eat a snack or I will go to them if needed. Majority of time the students will come to my office.
