How many would consider leaving nursing if they had a similar or slightly higher pay.

Nurses General Nursing

hello, i hear nurses complain all the time about their jobs and was just wondering if anyone would consider leaving nursing if given an opportunity with an equal or slightly higher pay,(yes i say slightly higher pay, maybe a dollar or 2 more/hr) and a reliable job off course. any thoughts.

um wow hearing all these nurses wanting to leave the profession is kind of scary

Clearly people are choosing Nursing (these days) for higher pay. We should be looking at why such a nobel profession fell into a shortage to begin with. Would you want to leave Nursing if it provided fair pay based on experience, and level of education?

I certainly would. Now, to find a way to do so.....

After 30 years of nursing, I have to say "yes" I would leave the profession if there was a job that paid as well and was not physically demanding. My body has taken a beating over the past 4 months. I may not have a choice but to leave the profession....

If I could make equal or slightly better pay working in EMS again, either as a flight nurse or as a paramedic, I'd make the move in a heartbeat.

I haven't started nursing yet, and I'm out!!! OK, oxymoron there  I'm a second career/second degree person, and I've switched to respiratory therapy which doesn't make as much in the long run, mainly bcse of everything I've read on this board. I have very young children and don't want to deal with the stress of nursing school, instructors, preceptors and mean colleagues & patients at this stage of my kids' lives. Plus shadowing a hospital RN and RT really gave me insight into the fields. I don't want to be a hospital RN, I want to be a primary care NP. I think I will eventually go to nursing school in about 10 years (just need to enjoy these early years with the kiddos), and hopefully there will be more direct entry NP programs that are cheaper than Vanderbilt's $100K!!!!

Right now, hands down, in a second! I hate my job! I hate the focus on customer service! I hate low staffing! I hate the BS the pervades my hospital!

Lots of hate:devil:!!!! Sorry guys.

I loved being a nurse, my job and the patients....now every day is a struggle....just when I think it can't get worse it does! The pressures of ER nursing are huge, but couple that with unrealistic expectations by an administration with their head up their behind, a public that expects drive thru service, and people so sick that I can't believe the change in acuity.....it makes for an unhappy work environment that sucks the life out of you!

If customer service is the drive, then staff. If safety is the goal, then staff. If you have sicker people, then staff not only the ER but the whole hospital so people are cared for properly. I am scared for my patients, for the staff and their licenses, and for healthcare in general. I love my co-workers, but everyone is wearing their job like a noose and they like me are unhappy. The only seemingly happy idiots are the slave-masters who have forgotten what's like in the trenches.

So right now I am looking for something away from the bedside as I attend school for my MSN-God knows I hope some day I have something good to say about my current facility, but all I can say is it's great compared to others I know....God help all of the patients! As for nursing, it just isn't something I would recommend to anyone unless I disliked them.

Sorry for the rant....was just thinking of posting a new thread when I saw this....a new thread entitled what can I do away from the bedside?:uhoh3:

Maybe it's just the northeast, maybe it's just the ER, maybe it's just the jerks I work for, but whatever it is I need a change.

I am with you all the way, Maisy! I am seriously thinking of taking a course in medical coding, so that I can use my knowledge somewhere else, and get rid of the physical demands that have wrecked havoc on my body. I would do nursing through an agency. Yeah, it sounds all good; now need to follow through!

Well, I worked for a few years in medical device industry and earned a truckload of money. But it was political, soul-destroying, and stressful with a lot of travel and backstabbing. So now I'm back in nursing, earning about half as much money but twice as happy. A lot of that is due to fantastic work environment, great boss and lovely colleagues.

I'd even take a pay cut..

I'd even take a pay cut..

Yeah. Unfortunately you can't take a pay cut from nothing. Unemployed nurse loses its charm a lot faster than unemployed anything else.
