How many BSN prepared RN's did/did not pass the Nclex on the first attempt??

Published

Hi. Just wanted to know what the % is of first and second time attempts on the Nclex for BSN prepared nurses. Most everyone I graduated with passed the first time and the rest on the second attempt. I have not heard of any BSN-RN's failing more than 2x though. Just curious.

According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the 2007 first-time pass rates were:

Diploma: 87.9%

BSN: 86.4%

ADN: 84.8%

I don't believe they calculate rates for people taking the test more than once. You'll find a lot of information here.

Check that: They do keep track of repeat test takers, although it's not broken down by educational level. The pass rate for US-educated nurses repeating the test in 2007 was 52.4 percent.

In our state, the ADN pass rate is about 5% higher than the BSN pass-rate.

Your state BON will have it broken down by program as well.

It really doesn't matter what the preparation is. There are so many individual variabilities, scholastic differences to come to a statistically relevant number.

Like others said.... it varies by state..... i graduated with my BSN.... from private Nursing school.... will be taking NCLEX for the third time this week....

and many ADN graduates who took it with me passed it on thier first try....

I failed three time with a bsn ...

I also graduated from a school with my bsn and have taken my boards twice and have failed both times. I am planning on taking my boards here again in a couple months. I think it just all depends on how well you take tests and your anxiety level.
