How long is it taking to land your 1st new grad job?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello fellow nurses!

I am wondering how long it is taking to land that first RN job. I know in some states jobs are scarce and I have read that many people have been looking over a year and still do not have a job. So I am wondering what you guys have heard or are experiencing. Also, if you could share which state you are in since job markets are varying from state to state.

I am going on two months of being a new grad, but have only been applying to jobs for about 2 weeks. I am just trying to get a realistic outlook on the market.

Thanks!

Thanks Peanut!

I had to do my preceptorship in med/surg as the spots for specialties were limited. I hope that doesn't hurt me in the long run. I am just starting to volunteer (since I am not working) and I hope that it will lead to an interview or two somehow. I am also trying to sign up for as many cert and review classes as possible since I don't want to lose my skills or knowledge.

Graduated May 2012 with a BSN from AZ. About 60 job apps in state and out. 1 interview before graduation (which i didn't get obviously). I'm starting the volunteer process at two hospitals and just finished ACLS. Out of 18 students, one is in a new grad program (which i interviewed for), one is doing dialysis clinic and home health, and two doing home health.

Looking in GA passed NCLEX beg. of july, I have had 2 interviews & no job offers, started applying approx end of April

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I am in Pennsylvania and graduated May 2012 from an ADN program and passed boards July 26, 2012. I went on 4 interviews and just accepted a part time position last week. I started applying in June.

Well I will be applying to volunteer positions at various places and just trying to make connections where ever I can. I received my first batch of "rejection" emails today and can only try to keep my head up. It is about 2.5 months since graduation and I want to show them that they wouldn't regret giving me a chance!

It took me 6 months. I am 6 weeks into my orientation at a level 1 trauma center ER.

Specializes in ICU.

Before graduation I had one job interview which I did not get and was not a good fit for me. From graduation it took 99 days to get a verbal offer. I was a tech at a hospital which did not hire me even after rave reviews from my manager. It was for the best. I would of hated the job. I went on 4 interviews 1 phone interview. I applied in FL, TX, VA, DC, CA, GA, NY, NJ, MD, NC, and TN. I found out the east coast has no jobs for me. Got 2 jobs offers within a week after staying away from the east coast.

Specializes in Emergency; med-surg; mat-child.

I graduated in May, and had my first interviews over the last two weeks. One phone with HR, then one f2f with a nurse, then one with the clinic manager. They called for references today. No bites on any of the other 28 jobs I've applied to, but 12 rejections. Not that I have a spreadsheet or anything . . . :lol2:

Graduated June 2012, Just got offered a job today. So a couple months, I am in upstate NY

If i may ask which hospital did you land a job? I graduated in Dec 2011, passed NCLEX in march 2012 and have been looking actively since April. I have filled over 100 applications and gotten 2 interviews with nursing homes but no job offer. My desire is to work in a hospital. Do you have any tips?

Best of luck in your new job.

Northern California, 300 applications and counting, no interview requests so far, applying for anything I might remotely qualify for. Can't get past the computer to a real human for 90% of the apps, and have received roughly 200 rejection emails. Been trying since April, graduated in May, very few in my class have jobs, and several of the ones that do went out of state. Some just went straight to grad school and didn't even try to get jobs here. NorCal is ugly right now...

Specializes in Cardiac/Neuro Stepdown.
