How Long Before Sciences Expire?

Hello everyone,

I have read many places on the board that most of the CCs have a time frame that they will allow your science pre-reqs before they have to be retaken. 5 years for example. How about the schools that you will be applying to?

Nowadays, at most programs, it is five years. Back in my day, there were a few schools that went for 7 years and the school that I was admitted to in advanced standing allowed decades old stuff. In today's competitive nursing school atmosphere, it is almost exclusively five years now. You need to find out this info from each program that you have any plans on applying to and adjust your schedule accordingly. That is why I always advise people to start out with the general ed stuff first because once you have that you normally never have to take it again. Save the applicable sciences (or other time limited courses) for last. HTH

It's 5 years for here as well. Which really stinks. Although, I get different versions all the time.

Some say, don't worry, it will transfer....others say...has to be within the last 5 years.

My school's current policy is 5 years but beginning in fall 08 sciences are good for only 3 years.

See, three years. The higher education money machine is more and more like other money making juggernauts. We all are intelligent enough to realize that the only reason there are time limits imposed, is to make as many people repeat stuff as much as possible, paying more and more money to stay in school forever.

And with the waiting lists at some schools getting longer and longer, they expect to pull in more and more wasted tuition money.

I think it depends on the CC and how they run their program. My curriculum guide only states "A grade of "C" or better for two semesters of high school chemistry". My chemistry is a decade ago and they accepted it. I talked w/the director of the program and she said they've been tossing around putting a time limit on it, but they haven't done it yet. She also said it would be good to brush up on my electrolytes but that can be addressed in the nursing program. In a way its a method of filtering out those who really would not do well in the program. My CC has a tough selection criteria and I guess they figure if you can get past that with great grades, you probably will have a great chance at being a successful nursing student. all the schools that i have looked at applying to have been five years and those where in oregon, idaho, nevada and california.

in dallas cc's it is 5 years but i have heard that they are working to get rid of that rule in my school. it is in progress.. it may or may not be implemented.

the reason for even having the 5 year rule is because they don't want older people coming back and getting into school when they haven't had a&p since 1970's or something... if it is only 1 year expired, you can usually get it waived. it is judged on an individual to individual basis at my school. if it is 1 or 2 years, they will sometimes let it slide. if an older student in their 40's hasn't had their sciences in a loooong time... they should re-take it because they may have forgotten alot of info.

My school says 5 years but will evaluate on an individual basis for classes that are older.
