How do I write a journal article critique?

Published

I have to write 4 journal article critiques on varying subjects having to do with nursing. I have not had a problem finding the artivles and getting them approved but I have never had to write a critique and the instructors have not given any guidelines.

Any help on this would be wonderful!

the resource that we were required to use in order to write these reviews is called:

Reading Research: A User Friendly Guide for Nurses and Other Health Professionals by Barbara Davies and Jo Logan

It is a 45 page paperback book.

Cost about $11

ISBN: 0-9205-1386-7

It tells you exactly what to write about

Specializes in Med-Surg.

Have you had a course in nursing research? Usually this kind of assignment isn't done until you've had that course. How in depth does it have to be?

I had a good source I used but can't seem to find it, but these sites cover the basics:

Here's one I recently did on a article that looked at how patients pray. I'll try to attach it.

Module 5.doc

Thank you both very very much! I am ordering that book now and will read the links and the attached critique.

Unfortunately we have not had anything on nursing research but there is a chapter in one our books that I will be reading.

Tweety, thanks for the excellent links. If you happen upon your other good source, please post it here. I just started my research class a couple weeks ago...

to critique a research article you need to know what the elements of and process of research are. it is helpful to have a nursing research textbook to help you do this. if you don't have one, you might check your school library for any textbooks or information on nursing research, scientific research or critiquing a research article. the librarian, if you're lucky a research librarian, should be able to help you with this.

the steps of research as they should appear in the official research report or an article (which is an abridged version) are as follows:

  1. introduction: introduction of research problem introduction of objectives introduction of how objectives will be achieved (methodology), optional introduction of main findings and conclusions
  2. literature review: review of previous work relating to research problem (to define, explain, justify) review of previous work relating to methodology (to define, explain, justify) review of previous work relating to results (particularly reliability, etc.)
  3. method (how the results were achieved): explanation of how data was collected/generated, explanation of how data was analyzed explanation of methodological problems and their solutions or effects
  4. results and discussion: presentation of results interpretation of results discussion of results (e.g. comparison with results in previous research, effects of methods used on the data obtained)
  5. conclusions: has the research problem been "solved"? to what extent have the objectives been achieved? what has been learned from the results? how can this knowledge be used? what are the shortcomings of the research, or the research methodology? etc.

basically, in a critique, you are going to either agree or disagree with steps #2 to #5 and explain why you feel that way.

Thanks Daytonite- I really appreciate how you simplified what seemed to be daunting to me before.

I will be completing two of them this weekend if I get on the ball. Also have a test to study for- ugghhh!
