How far do you drive for work?

Is an hour drive one way to long to consider for a job? I worry about working 12 hr shifts and then some and then attempting to drive home dead tired.

The closest hospital to me is 20 mins..after that everything is pretty much 45 mins to 1 hour and 30 mins away.

I would like to relocate either before or after nursing school closer to the kansas city area..which would give me a drive time of about 30 mins to a lot of different hospitals and other jobs...but if its normal to travel long distances for a nursing job then maybe its not justifiable to move...my husband likes the area we are in now.

relocating would put us about an hour from our current home.

so..how far do you drive or have driven to get to a job? how do you manage to drive safely after a long tiresome shift?

you must live in the same city I do.... What school are you going to?

My drive is 7.5 miles, about 10 minutes

Four miles, door to door. Depending on the number of school buses I encounter, it can take up to 15 minutes. There are no highways involved; it is great! For 26 years, I drove 40 miles/day; depending on traffic, it would take 30 minutes to 1.5 hours to get to work; yuck....I don't miss that commute at all!!

I'm with those who say that using the time to mentally prepare on the way, and wind down headed for home, is a good thing.

My drive is 30ish minutes, with a 12 hour shift. I like it.

However, I wouldn't want it to be any longer than that, because it would cut into my sleep-between-shifts, lol. The sleep is *important*!

Between 6-7 miles, traveled by subway or bicycle... By car on nights and weekends.

My drive is 80 miles each way. :uhoh3: Sometimes you take what you can get!

I drive 27 miles one way, 30 minutes without traffic, 50 minutes to one hour with traffic. I work 10 hour shifts.

I drive a hour to work, it is mosty on the highway with little traffic but it still gets lame. Especially when I work 9a-9p and then turn around work 7a-7p. I get 4-5 hrs of sleep when that happens. Knowing what I know now I don't know if I would have still taken the position.

I drive 35 minutes to get to work. And I love the fact that on my days off I don't see any patients/people from work because they all live in the other side of town.

I drive 50 miles one-way, mostly interstate. I do 3 12 hour shifts a week. Live in the country, where it's cheaper, work in the city with higher pay rates and better benefits. It's worth the drive.

3 minutes if the stoplight is green, 4 if it's red :D it's fabulous! i come home on my lunch break to see my family, i can pick up a shift if a nurse no call/no shows (rare of course) and be there with only 15 minutes lost of a shift, and (now this may be a plus or minus i haven't decided) when the weather's bad and some nurses who live far away can't make it in, i have no problem getting in to help! i live in indiana, we have unpredictable, crazy winters :)

40 minutes, 48 miles. I work weekend option and am only there twice a week unless I pick up extra on my own. It's highway miles and gives me a chance to prepare/wind down. It's hard sometimes - I have stopped and napped on the way home more than once - but overall worth it. I like where I work, but I also like being far far away from it on my days off.
