RN from NC moved to IL/IA area Endorsement Question
Greetings, I recently moved to IL and turned in my packet for Endorsement. My question is since my license was orginially in NC does the compact state still apply for Iowa? Or do I have to try to get an endorsement in Iowa as well. Thanks TheEmmyRN

Need urgent answer asap
Greetings, I just recently applied for my RN license in IL. I don't know the answer to your question but here is some information so you can figure out what to do. Below is the link to the application for Licensure in IL. There is a section about RNs trained abroad. http://www.idfpr.com/dpr/apply/forms/rn-en.pdf The number for the IL Nursing board is 217-524-6731. I was on hold for quite a long time but it was worth it. The application is pretty confusing so don't hestiate to call. Good luck and best wishes, TheEmmyRN

Should I be blame for this?
NSTEMI- means Non ST Elevation MI - a heart attack that doesn't show ST elevation on a 12 lead EKG. Only part of the coronary artery is blocked. CYA- I always though it meant "cover your A@@" Ha Ha Ha!

How far do you drive for work?
I drive a hour to work, it is mosty on the highway with little traffic but it still gets lame. Especially when I work 9a-9p and then turn around work 7a-7p. I get 4-5 hrs of sleep when that happens. Knowing what I know now I don't know if I would have still taken the position.

HELP! New grad, work nights, pregnant, depressed!!
A friend of the family had "Pre partum" depression. She was so depressed she could barely function (even though she was excited to be pregnant). She actually needed to be placed on anti-depressants during her pregnancy. After her daughter was born the depression lifted and she no longer needed to be on anti-depressants. I know this condition is not very common but it might be something you might want to look into. Best of luck and I hope you feel better.

New Joint Commission Protocol on Insulin
We too use the protocol for insulin drips. I think is it great, set the pump for an hour and then recheck and change the drip. I work in the emergency room, so having something that beeps to remind you of something is great. I am a new grad so I never used any but this method.

Question for new nurses
In my program we spent A LOT of time in clinical and our last semster we precepted with an RN and eventually picked up their entire Pt load. We had simulation labs in a room with a one way mirror, dummies that could speak to us and a monitor that showed vital signs/ Pt history. AND IT WAS VIDEO RECORDED! I LOVED simulation lab, it was a nice safe place to make mistakes that we hopefully never make again. I went to a community college and they have a great reputation with the local hospital systems for training new RNs (and our NCLEX success rate is nearly 100% for most of the graduating classes). Does that mean that I have transitioned seamlessly to my role as a RN (graduated 6months ago) . . . NO! But I feel like they gave me the experience and background I need to at least survive.

What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?
I had a gentleman come in because he didn't have a bowel movement the day before and he felt like he had to have a bowel movement. I asked him how often he usually had BMs had he said every other day. . . the doctor ordered an enema. I came in to give the enema and the Pt said he didn't need it because he had a BM already. He had it BEFORE the doctor came in. I asked if he told the MD that when he came in examine him. . . . he said "no because he didn't ask me" YOU ARE HERE FOR CONSTIPATION WHY WOULD THE DOCTOR ASK YOU IF YOU HAD A BM WHILE YOU WERE HERE! Really!?

What type of Shifts does your ER have?
We have 7a-7p, 9a-9p, 11a-11p, and 7p-7a. One the day shifts we can switch around but day nurses don't go over to nights unless they volunteer.

Hate my JOB!
i am sorry that you are having such a difficult time and you are not getting the support you need. can you talk to your supervisor about transferring early; sometimes they will make an exception if they don't want to lose you all together. have to checked your hospitals tuition policy? many hospitals say you have to work for them but they don't specify how much. can you work part-time for them or prn and still fulfill our obligation? best of luck! theemmyrn

Thinking about leaving 1st nursing job after 5 months- any suggestions
Thank you for all of your posts! I am planning on staying in my ER position for at least a year. I just signed up for some on-line classes to work toward my BSN. I enjoy my work (most of the time) and I really do need my hospital experience before moving on.

Thinking about leaving 1st nursing job after 5 months- any suggestions
Greetings, I just wanted some advice from some seasoned nurses. . . I am a new grad and I have been working in a busy ER for the past 5 months. I really like it but the hospital is an hour away from my house and the commute is really getting to me. I have a 3 year old son and on the days I work I don't see him at all. I miss my little dude! My sister-in-law works for our local health department and they have an opening. I was thinking about applying. I was wondering if leaving my first position so soon would eventually hurt my career later on? I feel guity even thinking about leaving, especially since the hospital was so kind in giving me my first job when new grad positions were Very hard to come by. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Nurse full time means?????
Maybe you work certain days and then are on call the rest of the time. Some unit managers are on call "24/7".

Let's introduce ourselves...
Greetings all new grads! I graduated 12 May and I passs the NCLEX with 75 questions on 13 June. I started work in the Emergency Room 23 June. I like it pretty good so far (depending on the day) I am currently still on orientation and will be off orientation right before Thanksgiving. I am pretty nervous about being on my own.
