Nurses Relations
Published May 7, 2010
After having nurse's day come and go without our employer even acknowledging the fact that it was nurse's day, am just curious as to how other employers honor their nurses on that day? Look forward to your responses!!

Last year I was working at an LTC/rehab and all nurses got a Tshirt with something along the lines of "I'm a nurse, what's your superpower?" on it. And a cute little saying that tied into the treats that were attached to it.
This year I work in a clinic and the receptionists brought in Panera treats one morning. I also do a very PT charge RN position at a different LTC and we got thank you for all we do emails from different administrators.
This week is national healthcare week, and it's jam-packed with fun things going on, treats, etc. During the WEEK. During the DAY. You know, when ALL healthcare professionals are doing their jobs.

Nothing.
So on my nights I bought everyone in ER and med/surg coffee. Said happy nurses week.

Nothing. We NEVER get a mention or a gift. The LAB staff do. They get signs all over the place and rewards all week.

I got a pen. But not from my employer, come to think of it. Oh and some cake that was a couple days old because I started back late in the week.

We were given the opportunity to donate our time, or money, or to participate is some other fundraising efforts for other worthwhile charities in our area. Nurses give so little throughout the year it was nice to actually do some good for people in the in the area. In that way, during Nurses Week, we could offset some of our guilt about being such an enormous drain on our health care systems resources.

After reading of the astonishing generosity of all our employers, I am beginning to feel like many of us are treated like "red-headed step-children".....no offense to actual red-heads.....
