How do you deal with someone trying to get you fired?

Published

I work in a SNF, usually on the LTC side of things. Recently, I have noticed that certain coworkers have been acting differently towards me. Today I received a call from the head of my department expressing 'concerns' that had been brought to her. Apparently, there have been people coming to her and saying bad things about me, all of which are untrue, with dashes of honesty thrown in. Apparently, I am "bringing in excessive baggage in order to steal resident items" and am "looking at Mediaographic material on facility computers". Both are lies, of course, but the way that it was phrased by my department head was exactly the same way only one other person has said it before. One of my direct supervisors. IMO, this nurse has been dismissive & exclusionatory towards me since my first day.

I occasionally bring in some of my own supplies, as the facility fails to do so, even after MULTIPLE EMPLOYEE COMPLAINTS that they lacked the necessary items to do their jobs. How, for example, are you supposed to change a soiled brief when you have no wipes, or even washcloths, to do so? Or when you lack clean briefs to put on them? Despite complaints to the facility administration, and company administration, as well as the state's department of health, NOTHING has been done.

The only time ny tablet gets turned on is when I'm on my break (in the break room, BTW), and all I do is check my e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter. If I step away, I make sure that it is password locked (as I explained to my department supervisor), so for anyone to even see what I was looking at would be impossible. I made it a habit after an ex decided they were going to break into my home and go on a rampage before stealing, amongst other things, my phone, which they then used to make threatening calls and send nasty text messages in my name.

But, of course, I am the bad guy here, right? I MUST be doing these things because a supervisory nurse made the claim. And the fact that this call happens the night after I work with her seems to reaffirm my suspicions.

It makes me worried because I was actually due for an annual evaluation and possibly a raise before this, and certain things have come to light through the rumor mill lately. The facility is in serious financial trouble. They do not have adequate staff (4 CNAs & 3 nurses for over 100 patients/residents during 11P-7A) as the vast majority of staff are quitting based on how they are treated), they owe so much money to the company approved plumber ($30K) that they had to hire one under the table to do work for them, and that they even switched companies to put down carpet in the facility hallways after the company that did the therapy area is still waiting on their $50K from over 5 years ago.

Should I even bother with this place anymore? I have been applying at other places, but so far with no luck. But this raises some serious concerns as to my future in the field. Am I going to get fired on the word of someone who doesn't like me? Am I going to end up unemployed when the bank comes in and hangs a forclosure notice on the front door?

Pretty much at a loss as to if I should just cut my losses and go, or just what I should do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Another thing you could try is to show your supervisor/in-charge person exactly what items you are bringing in your bag at the start of each shift and taking with you when you leave. That will potentially eliminate speculation from anyone who may be trying to tarnish your reputation. However, it should never really come to that. If the staff don't trust you, for perceived or real reasons, even offering "proof" that you're not stealing or bringing in contraband items may not help.

An interesting idea, but then they could nail the OP for bringing in unauthorized items (not registered inventory with a MSDS). This will give the employer a bonifide reason for termination.

The writing is on the wall, walk away and don't look back.

Yeah

Get out of there!!!

In the future don't give toxic nurses any excuse to attack your practice. Don't bring in stuff from home to care for patients. I think this is the wrong thing to do on several levels. The most basic reason is that its not your responsibility to keep this place supplied with things necessary to do your job. You are taking ownership of something that is not your responsibility. Nurses do this to not good end. Also leave the tablet at home if its an issue but you should be able to look at it on your break. The tablet use on your breaks don't sound like its worth the grief its causing you.

I'm a nurse and the most basic reason I go to work is to be paid. It sounds like this place may not have the ability to do that much longer. Get out of there before you wind up doing a couple weeks work for free. Put in your notice. This dump isn't worth your time

Look for another job, it sounds like this place is totally okay with the high turnover rate of employees.

I agree with previous posters.

Years ago, I went through a similar situation, and foolishly hung on, trying harder to make someone like me. It blew up in my face.

Find another job, any other job, even if you have to drive or work an inconvenient shift.

This can only end one way for you. Being canned, with false allegations about misconduct.

And then it will be almost impossible to get another job.

100% agreed. I worked at a pretty terrible SNF for three months, myself, and I did the exact same thing. I hung on, trying to prove I was a good nurse and could do this.

I WAS a good nurse, but I couldn't be one with that facility. They fired me on some trumped-up charges. (I could have coped with "excessive absence," as I did take mental health days due to stress, but I WAS sick at work one day and they accused me of "making a scene" and outright rejected my doctor's note because "they didn't put a diagnosis.") Not one of the most pleasant experiences of my life. I sometimes regret not going after them legally, but at the time, I just wanted them out of my life.

I'd have been so much better off if I'd run when I saw the writing on the wall.

I would say cut ties and find something else. Once rumors start spreading they are like wild fire and even if you amend your actions to not give them anything to talk about there will always be those people who say "remember when so & so did this?" Be above reproach and finish your days there caring for the residents and continue to be an advocate. Offer ideas to help manage supplies etc.

DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT! Get your OWN medical insurance coverage for your license...PLEASE! I have 2 separate coverages for my licenses as RN/LVN. Respond to any complaints in writing. Get copies of ALL complaints against you. Speak to your Human Resource Director and document EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY who has something to say. Make your own feelings known as far as defamation, harassment, discrimination, hostile work environment, etc. Watch your back and watch your co-workers. Monitor your residents carefully! Watch your charting and your PAYSTUBS! if the facility don't give you paystubs, request them along with print offs of your TIMESHEET. I sued a facility and have a trial date April 2, 2018. I'm suing the whole CORPORATION which abruptly sold 14 facilities after multiple deaths, a suspected impaired nurse who started this whole mess... THEY LIED, ALTERED MEDICAL RECORDS, TIMESHEETS, STATEMENTS AGAINST ME, AND A LOT MORE. Their worst nightmare is becoming a REALITY! This saga has been on-going for almost 4 years. I'm in a good place as 2 judges ruled in my favor to proceed to trial. The facility lawyers has stalled, lied, and done everything to stop me. I even fought in court against motions WITHOUT a lawyer for 7 months. I have a lawyer now and he in on track, kicking butt and ready for trial. Don't let them jeopardize your license or up-end your life. You sound like a caring nurse. Wish I could type more info. FIGHT BACK! You can sue individuals in administration too and name them as defendants. FIGHT BACK! Before you move on to something else, If you cant stand up for yourself, you cant stand up for your residents. Be strong! I'm sick of these "for-profit" corporations that abuse employees, hire incompetent managers. Write the STATE, send it under affidavits and certified mail. Contact Consumer Protection Services and get the names of investigators too. So much.... Pray, Fight and do whats right. Good Luck!

Too easy to walk away! I had false allegations against me, they reported me to the BON, then tried to get State investigators to "substantiate" their lies, The state did not find any wrongdoing and did not change their report. Make sure the facility follow their policies & procedures. I kept and still keep anything they give me to sign, including the employee handbook. If they don't treat you like they should, sue their butts. This is your license. I had to pay out-of-pocket for a lawyer, but they didn't count on me having $$$ or a determination to see this through. The nurse that started the problem was under board "stipulations", was diverting meds and lied to keep me from reporting her. They fired me and I was the SUPERVISOR. They never got my side of the story, never did that nurse nothing even though I filed a complaint against her with the board. Guess what? Months later, she got CAUGHT! She was under 2 state investigations the whole time, but continued to work at the facility. She was suppose to be suspended until the investigations were complete. Only after I sent the media to question those deaths, and after she was fired they sold the corporation to new owners. Well, i didn't run. Yes, they RETALIATED and has been sued. Trial April 2nd. Cant wait! I got evidence, they have nothing and no one. I am being black-listed, but i have a non-compact state license and love to travel. No one defines my character or determine my destiny in life. No one but me and GOD! Exodus 14:14 is what has carried me this far.

I just wanna say I love that last quote u posted. It's quite inspiring!

And to give my opinion to the TS, I would leave that job right away. Who cares about the raise? You can find way better job w/ better environment and better coworkers. Sometimes It's not the work that's stressing us, it's the people we work with.

Well it seems like you have been through a lot. I often wonder about peer pressure and LTC staff.

I would like to point out some issues

1. How do you really know your company has not paid these vendors for their work being completed? Maybe it was a bid, they did a not so good job and the facility refused to complete their payment in order to recoup their loses.

2. Bringing in supplies when you do not have any "wipes" this includes washcloths. You may run out of washcloths I suggest you sit down with your supervisor and communicate you need those washcloths for direct patient care. The wipes I do not suggest you use as some have ingredients that may make them a supposed "physician order need". As a family member and manager of SNF I would be alarmed if anyone brought in wipes to use on the residents.

3. You bring in your own computer to use on your break. Although this is fine I would caution you to not walk away from your computer, and be very careful about your website choices. Did you have the seal of approval from maintenance to even bring this in? Because it is uncommon you are attracting attention to your self. As a LNHA I would not allow staff to bring in electronic devices and cell phones are only for emergencies. They are to be kept in the staff areas, no worries about inappropriate pictures this includes your laptop.

4. You bring in bag of supplies. Again I am not sure this is the best course of action. Staff typically do not do this, if there is such a lack of supplies I would start to write a journal of how my day went (HIPAA) approved. Goes something like this.... today was a great day for me with little hiccups even though I did not have enough supplies...I had a conservation with a co worker that was to me strange at 1340 hrs. I will speak to my co-worker and follow up to ensure we are on the same communication level...

5. Co-Workers are voicing concerns over your possibility of misappropriating facility items. I would nip this in the bud and ensure I am above reproach by allowing my bag to be observed upon entering and exiting the building. I would also go as far as when giving report I would do a short walkabout not just at the med cart to ensure I am above reproach.

Look the reality is when you do outside the normal you get noticed for good or bad. If you have done nothing wrong stand up for yourself in the most friendly manner, if there is something going on then I would quit before I got fired. Having good boundaries make you a valuable employee and it sounds like you need some, not trying to be critical just trying to help you out. I would stop bringing in my computer or at least leave it in my locker/vehicle. I would only bring in my lunch and nursing supplies ie stethoscope, scissors, you know what you can carry in your pockets. It is the facility responsibility to provide what is needed, what is medical necessary. If the state has done nothing then I am sure they will get a call again and come out to investigate. Residents their families and staff have been known to contact the state, I am OK with this. It is what it is.
