How did you choose your nursing program?

Published

It's that time of year where nursing program interviews are underway and many schools are getting ready to make their selections. This question goes out to those of you who were accepted to multiple programs and had to choose one. How did you choose your nursing program? What attracted you to that school? Did you make your choice based on hard facts or feelings? All answers and advice welcome.

Look at things such as completion rate (how many students graduated on time), NCLEX first time pass rate, ACEN or CCNE accreditation.

I looked at several things. Cost, reputation of school with the local hospitals, nclex pass rate, accreditation, and the job market as far as the ASN vs. BSN goes. I also looked at the job market to see that nurses were being hired in my area.

It's a lot to look at, but making the correct decision was important to me.

I chose the one that offered me financial aid. The other schools were requiring me to pay cash.

I applied to 3 and got accepted to 2. One school had a smaller class size, higher NCLEX pass rates, and a good reputation within the community, but was more expensive. I decided not to let the cost deter me. I can gladly say I made the right decision, no regrets.

So which do you think is better... A free standing nursing school, a nursing school attached to their main college campus, or a nursing school attached to an active hospital?
