How to become RN in British Columbia?

Published

Hi guys i need your suggestions on this, my wife recently passed the recent board exam given by PRC last June2008, in this regard shes asking the step to take in going for an RN in British Columbia, Vancouver. What are the requirements so she can have her papers assessed.

Hi breech,

your experience inspired me. i've been contemplating on applying for registration in BC but was hesitant since i haven't heard of anybody who have successfully done it from the Philippines. I'm about your age too. Difference is i've worked only in an ambulatory and private surgical clinics for approximately a year. So, im not sure if i'll be made eligible. you know how hard it is just to raise the application fee.

hi fmog,

Im from the Philippines, in contrast with you, I haven't known of somebody who register to CRNBC that was unsuccessful. Experience is not needed in order to be made eligible with CRNBC as long you did not graduate 5 years ago.

Specializes in Medical Surgical/OR/DR/Endoscopy.

thank you so much breech. I'm from the Philippines too.

hello! I have a question regarding IELTS for applying in BC. I have read this from the crnbc.ca interational applicants (what you do):

"Applicants for registration must demonstrate fluency in English. If English is not your first language, English fluency tests are required. As of January 1, 2007, passing scores on a CRNBC-approved English fluency test are required at the time of application for registration. English test scores must be no more than one year old."

I dont have IELTS yet but can i proceed in lodging my application since it will take time before CRNBC assess my documents. By the time they will sent me a letter (which I think will take 3 months or so) regarding lacking IELTS I already have my IELTS result. Bytheway Im taking that exam next month.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

i got your point! but i would suggest to have first all the requirements before registering with crnbc.

one of the instructions in the forms go this way:

They will not assess your application without the English exam. You could send your application before your English exams but they will not do anything with your file without the score

wow very quick reply! thanks so much.. now here are my follow-up questions.. in the step 4 of the application process they will send me a notice/"Outstanding Requirements" which will be my IELTS for that matter, the questions are:

1. how long can they process my application again after submitting that lacking document?

2. can i submit/forward my IELTS result as soon as I have them without CRNBC sending me a notice first? or i'll wait for that notice?

thanks guys so much! I really love to read thread like this which inspires and gives me hope... i had enough reading thread about being jobless and difficulty finding job here in PI.

number 1 question: The processing time solely depends how quick your regsitration assessor will do the thing plus the completeness of your documents as well as paying the fee. Assessment will go smooth if they have all the necessary documents.

number 2 question: I would suggest don't wait for them to give you notice. Submit what's needed to have a smooth sailing assessment of your file. Please take time to read the forms because all of the instructions in submitting IELTS score are there.

and one more thing.. to breech... Im also in June 2006 batch. I read in one of your post that CRNBC required you to submit the DOLE retake result. Should I include that in my application or wait for their notice. Am I the one who will submitt that document or it should be coming from DOLE? thanks so much... Are you now reviewing for you CRNE?

We are in the same boat. I'm also a June 2006 passer. Request a certified true copy from DOLE of your retake scores and ask them to forward to CRNBC in a sealed envelope.

Before I was made eligible by CRNBC, I was asked a copy of it. It took me few weeks delay because of that thing.

I'm in the process of looking CRNE review materials.

there are actually more questions to come.. hehe since you respond so quickly I will start bugging you now!

You said that you only had 6 mos. ICU training, that means you are not really employed right? Did you include that training in the Internationally-educated application form? Form 16-D (nursing experience)? Do we need to include documents that will support these said trainings? What other trainings did you include? (if you dont mind me asking).

So in the Form 37-Employment Reference for Nurse Registration, it should be from Canadian hospital/employer right?

I cant thank you enough for responding to my queries.

yes, im not employed as staff nurse. Indicate in that form all your experience as RN whether its a paid job or not (volunteer). (I think there's an instruction about this in that form). No supporting documents are needed coz there's no instruction of submitting it.

I include IV trainings and BLS.

Form 37 is not for Canadian employer. It should be from your previous employers in your home country for whom you have worked as RN of at least 3 months.

Form 37 is for paid work right? So you did not use this form? hehe.. sorry if Im a bit irritating to you. I just want to clear things out before lodging my application to CRNBC.

After you made eligible by CRNBC, did they sent you your Temporary Registration? or we have to apply for that one? Is that the same with Temporary Work Permit? How about your visa?

I dont know if im asking the correct questions or all the information I got mixed up. Im also considering LPN in BC but I have to try RN first. Do I have to thank you again! :loveya:hehehe....
