How bad will it get in the fall/Winter time?

Updated:   Published

And is there anything we can do to prepare ourselves for what is to come??

Best case scenario, there will be a vaccine, however I highly doubt it we will have anything in the next few months.

Is there anything health care facilities can do to prepare? Extra ICU beds/Covid units? Stock up on PPE?

What about non work, stock up on food/water/necessities, and be ready to hunker down?

This doesn't look good to me at all. I am in FL and despite the warm weather the virus is spreading like wildfire. Our hospitals are overwhelmed at the moment. We have Covid units in SNF facilities. I can only imagine when the cold weather hits , and everyone will be inside most of the time, how bad it will get.

What are your thoughts?

I scared ? I don't know what to do. I had a panic attack last night at home called 911 I couldn't breathe. My BP was +170 systolic.

I don't know what is coming ahead but I already feel burnt out and overwhelmed.

?

I went and talked to my PCP and got some PRN medication for those moments. Our stress and anxiety is REAL. Seek out help to deal with it. If nothing else it helps me sleep, which in turn helps EVERYTHING. Sending you hugs and hoping you know you are not alone.

Haven't read through the thread yet but I think it will be horrible because of flu season, especially for asthmatics and people with bronchitis or COPD.

And something isn't right at Moderna

I was told I would be getting SEVEN injections... but that's not what's been printed in the media and disclosed in press releases. It's possible the vaccine is going to be a flop. I think it's interesting that recently two other companies were awarded large sums of money for their vaccine candidates.

Say what now? SEVEN? Type of bootleg vaccine is that?

One that struggles to result in any type of long-term immunity. ?

Multiple vaccine injections will be given per NIH press release -- common in vaccine development. Those that were initially given saline placebo may be given actual mRNA later in study --all up to study design.

NIH: Phase 3 clinical trial of investigational vaccine for COVID-19 begins

July 27, 2020

...Trial volunteers will receive two intramuscular injections approximately 28 days apart. Participants will be randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either two 100 microgram (mcg) injections of mRNA-1273 or two shots of a saline placebo. The trial is blinded, so the investigators and the participants will not know who is assigned to which group.

Volunteers must provide informed consent to participate in the trial. They will be asked to provide a nasopharyngeal swab and a blood sample at an initial screening visit and additional blood samples at specified time points after each vaccination and over the two years following the second vaccination. Scientists will examine blood samples in the laboratory to detect and quantify immune responses to SARS-CoV-2....

I'm confused b/c when they first called me I could have sworn they said Moderna but they called me Monday to schedule the first injection this week and said it was Pfizer...

I feel like Moderna's vaccine might be a flop? Pfizer was recently awarded a ton of money from the government. Just a haunch. I couldn't get the first injection this week b/c I have symptoms and was awaiting my Covid test results. I tested negative so I can go next week for the first injection. It is double blind so I won't know if I'm getting saline or vaccine.

Moderna has never had a vaccine go to market. The company is questionable IMO.

see my above post- this is Moderna's and I was called for Pfizer's (in my original post I thought I was being called for Moderna's). It's possible they said "seven visits" and I interpreted that as seven injections but I honestly thought they said seven injections. I will admit when they called I was very skeptical that it was even a legit call- I wasn't paying very close attention to what she was saying b/c I was concerned it was a phishing scam. Turns out, it wasn't. I will get some clarification when I call and will report back after the first injection. I def don't want to be spreading false information!

I just googled "Pfizer" and the first article that popped up is Motley Fool article (for investors, which I am) "Why Pfizer Could Be a Bigger Coronavirus Winner Than Moderna"

I don't invest in any of these biotechs, or any other "Covid plays" and I take investment articles w/a grain of salt b/c authors often have short or long positions on the stocks they're hawking.

(I'm hoping I will know if I get the actual vaccine b/c they usually sting a little and I'll have soreness after, not to mention side effects. I think I'll know right away if they're only injecting me w/saline)

I've heard Michael T. Osterholm, PhD, MPH, Epidemiology expert speak about Covid-19 on several cable shows --- Winter will be very bad especially when HS and college students are back in class + partying. Will start at end September post Labor Day holiday gatherings and ramp up from there.

Here's some of his advice/commentary:

Michael Osterholm on where we are now with the COVID-19 pandemic

What we’re experiencing now is something Minnesota epidemiologist Michael Osterholm has likened to a “national forest fire.” During a time of surging cases, he told NPR, contact tracing and traditional testing aren’t going to go far enough to slow down the spread.

Given this is a new infectious agent, it is impossible to know what it is going to do. The best guess is to look at how it has behaved in the recent past, and make predictions based on the assumption that it will continue to behave as it has. And we know the flu and the ordinary diseases are going to be there too.

We do know that the current administration is not going to do the only thing that has so far gotten this epidemic under control elsewhere: Follow proper disease limiting procedures, such as shutting down the whole country's non-essential activities for at least a month, require the wearing of masks whenever out in public (with strong criticism of anybody not wearing a mask by everybody else that sees it--maybe even tickets and fines), stay-at-home order for non-essential jobs/activities, etc. You all know the drill.

While I am sorry for the family that Herman Cain died of Covid-19, I do think that maybe that will get the attention of some of the "no maskers", assuming they don't want to get sick with it 9 days after attending a rally--and then die.

We can write our mayors, governors, legislators (both state and federal) and demand that Dr. Fauci's recommendations be followed. Vote only for legislators who promise to follow proper Public Health procedures. We can and must use all precautions ourselves, especially at work. Nurses often don't want to "cause trouble" or "complain". Congressman John Lewis gave us good advice, "Get into good trouble", by which he meant fighting for that which is good and right will get you into trouble, but if we all--as nurses--don't stand up for what is right, who will? If nobody demands the powers that run this country start doing the right things, nothing will get better. Possibly, things could get much, much worse.
