How to ask for part-time after accepting full-time position

Nurses General Nursing

I recently accepted an RN position at my dream hospital (located 1 hour away via commute). I would be working 3 12hr noc shifts. However, I have been feeling really guilty about having to put my notice in, so I have been holding off on doing this (I currently work at a clinic with day shift hours).

Is it bad to accept an RN position as a full-time nurse, then ask to reduce hours to 2 12 shifts? I haven't asked yet, but want to. I am wondering if it's possible to work at both jobs part-time, so that the guilt of quitting won't eat at my conscience (my supervisor just personally gave me a huge Christmas bonus and I would feel guilty for leaving).

You can ask, but they may not have part-time work available, and they may not be willing to work around your other job's schedule.

The Christmas bonus should not factor in, at all. The one hour commute time and your ultimate career ambitions probably should.

There’s a distinct possibility that if you ask for part time hours after accepting a full time position they will completely rescind the entire offer. Also, trying to coordinate two work schedules is going to be an absolute nightmare for you and I guarantee there will be conflicts.

I would not ask bc of the reasons wuzzie stated. I would just accept and only work that one job. It is very hard to manage 2 jobs and it will get real old real quick. You can always return the bonus if it will ease your conscience (although for me this would also depend on how long you have been there etc). I would also make sure you really want the new position as it is a long commute that can also get old real quick. Good luck what ever you decide!

It doesn’t hurt to ask. But there is no guarantee they will allow you to go part time. I would be open to part time and per diem just to keep your foot in the door. Are the commute and working two jobs the only reason’s for the change of heart?

Ditch that guilt. It's a job, not a child or a pet. People move to different positions for many reasons and if you fell guilty about a move and let it show you're setting yourself up to be taken advantage of  by a future employer. You'll be worked extra shifts until you drop if they know they can guilt you into coming in every time.

Don't "rock the boat" at your new position, especially for reasons of guilt.
