Houston Nurse Residency Summer 2021 Applicants

Published

I wanted to start a new thread for those of us applying to Houston new grad nurse residency programs to ask questions and share information.

I am brand new to this site so I hope I'm doing this correctly... Good luck everyone!

I was wondering about this too because I applied and got two identical emails within a few days of applying basically just asking to respond with my graduation date and I answered both of them then never heard anything else. I'm wondering if I need to contact someone about it

I would definitely reach out and push a bit. I was very annoying and then got 3 interviews with HCA haha

What position? did you get any offer?

Did anyone apply to the HCA residency?

Yes! I have accepted an IMCU position at an HCA location. Reach out to your recruiter and be push for an interview on the floor you really want!

I'm interviewing for a position in the IMCU and have a couple questions for you.

Did they require that you sign the 2-year contract when you accepted the offer? Do you start right away or is it a July start like most of the others? Do you feel that their pay is equivalent to the other residency programs? I've heard so many mixed things that I'm somewhat hesitant but would really love to start in the IMCU and get that experience!

Hello!!

Had an interview with Methodist Medical center last month.  I haven't heard anything.  I was told they would decide by April 1 and also let me know by email if the position had be filled. Nothing so far

Also had an interview request from Memorial Hermann last month but when I clicked to schedule an interview, no slots were available.  When I emailed the recruiter, I was told it was an error and at this time would not be selected for an interview.  So embarrassing!

I don't know whether or not to keep waiting or start applying to other hospitals and openings.

So my start date is set for 6/7 but I believe they have multiple start dates. I have not signed a contract just yet, my recruiter told me I would sign about a month before my start date. As for their pay, it is equivalent to the other residency programs, but they do offer a nice incentive for signing the two-year contract which other residency programs are not offering. I've also heard mixed things about HCA but have had a few friends go through their staRN program and they all feel like it was a great program! I am still waiting to hear back from other hospitals, as I really want to start on an ICU but overall I'm grateful to have a job! Good luck with your interview!

Thank you! That is great to hear. I'm also waiting to hear back from other hospitals too so hoped a contract would not have to be signed right away. ? I appreciate you answering my questions!

I'm in their StaRN program! Their pay is $28.50/H (or so). Also just found out last week that not a lot of people get sign up bonuses. They have multiple start dates. I'm part of their FB group and it seems there's a start every week LOL. Yes there's a two year contract. Apparently you can "switch" your position if you talk to your hiring manager whenever there's an open position at the unit you would like. Like if you get hired for Medsurg (you signed the contract and you've started the program), you can talk to your manager to see of you can be transferred to whatever unit you want. Obviously that doesn't guarantee you will get transferred but maybe. Also I talked to someone last year who was hired for a unit and then she got asked if she'd like to go to another unit and continue her residency there (she went from a med surg type of unit to a cvicu unit). I will say that, they're a little um "shady" when you get a call from a hiring manager about interviewing for X unit. What I mean is that someone I knew from the didactic part of the program interviewed for an ICU unit (or IMU can't remember) and then afterwards she found out it was a covid unit. IDK if she didn't ask questions during her interview or if they dodged that question but that happened. Also someone else was hired for another ICU unit in another location and during week 4 of our program which is when we go to our facilities for a few days, she got told she may/can/will float to a covid unit and she wasn't very onboard with that when she told us. I was also sort of blindsided when I got a call from a recruiter asking if I'd like an interview between 3 different units and the unit I chose as a first choice would be something but it was something else which I found out during my interview but by then I couldn't ask for another interview from the recruiter. After my initial disappointment from partially my misunderstanding, I do enjoy and like my unit now (I'm on the preceptorship part of the program). So be very direct with your questions during your interview so you don't get blindsided once you're already legally hired!

Nope, it’s definitely not you not asking the right questions.  HCA is shady AF and lies about certain units pathway have ppl interviewing for bc they know that if they say what unit you’re actually interviewing for up front ppl won’t want to do it.  It happened to me 3 times in a row so I decided not to work for them

I totally agree, they’re shady. I already graduated in Dec but didn’t want to start until June/July (I had a baby) and when I started applying again all the interviews were for fast start dates even though I kept telling recruiters I couldn’t. It’s like they had no regard. Then I mentioned all north-ish locations that I would want to apply for and they set me up for a location 45miles/1hr drive time away. Since it was L&D I said I would think about it and talk it over with my family but they still sent me an offer letter and basically said deal with it or I won’t be offered anything else. And ever since then I haven’t been able to get in touch with anyone so RN I have an offer just in limbo bc they won’t return my calls or emails.
But unfortunately I haven’t been contacted by anyone else so may have to suck up the lack of communication and hr drive.

they really do suck at communication. is it the southeast location that you got an L&D offer? I had to push so hard and email many times to get an interview for L&D

So I went ahead and sent an email to a recruiter last night and she responded this morning saying the next ER cohort that I could be in won't start until 7/12 which is fine but she said they'll just call me closer to that time... not sure when that would be. Maybe I should email her again in a month or so?
