A 300+ bed hospital here in Indianapolis, IN. shut down yesterday due to finances. Over 200 nurses lost their jobs. The closing has really shocked everyone around here. Our hospital has had 260 lay-offs in the last year (no nurses, all management and Techs/CNA's) but it still makes everyone nervous. As bad as my job is, I feel really lucky to have it right now!

I am truly sorry to read this. I feel just awful for you and the others now without (or soon to be without) work due to this closing. Any ideas what you want to do? Please let us know how you are doing if you need to look for new work; I really do wish you all my best.

I lived in Indy from 92 to 96 and Winona was doing poorly then - never hiring, laying off. For this particular hospital - this should not come as news. They weren't even wanting students to come there (I did an ADN completion program in Indy).
SmilingBlueyes...I think you misunderstood...I do not work at the hospital that closed down. It is just very close to the hospital I work at now. My hospital's still open...but we haven't been doing so hot either, so who knows what will happen??

Hmmmm...I just moved to Indy to be near family, and I'm not finding it a place that is "nurse friendly". I've read and seen a lot in the few short weeks I've been scouting the area to see if I should stay or move back to California, and what I'm finding out about the healthcare management here has not been promising enough to get me to stay.
I am sorry. Chalk it up to reading after 12 hours on shift and not sleeping for over 24. I feel for all affected, however. I really do.

~~Making a mental note to cross Indy off the list of places I'm willing to relocate~~
Last thing I need is to inadvertently wind up in a place that doesn't like nurses.
cheerful,
I agree with you and sad thing is, I live here!!!!!
Last year at my hospital, 260+ people lost their jobs, new management took over which is AWFUL by the way, over 60% of our regular staff has left in the last year. It doesn't seem to be getting any better, either. I live on the outskirts of Indy and after I graduate RN school next May, I'm hoping to get on at a small community hospital closer to my home. Maybe things will be better there. Good luck to you!

San Jose Medical Center which is the only hospital serving the downtown San Jose area is now closing in 90 days instead of in 2007. They are owned by Columbia HC They have lost over $45 million in the last 3 years. The hospital treats 100 inpatients a day and more at the outpatient clinics. This is where the Mayor was taken earlier this year when he had a stroke. The Santa Clara County will now only have two trauma centers Stanford in the North County and Valley Med in the Central county area. The paper stated aprox 900 people will lose jobs.
The impact will be very noticeable this winter when pneumonia and flu season hits.

Do you mind my asking which hospital you work for? I am considering moving to Indy when I graduate in May. A friend of mine startrd working @ Riley and after she passes boards will make $29.00 an hr.
If you don't want to answer on the board, could you PM me? I have lived in Indiana most of my life and graduation is coming. I have 4 kiddos and my husband has work in the same place for 12 yrs. So I need all the info I can get about which hospitals are good and which ones I should stay away from.
Due to a scholarship I received, I am required to work in an Indiana hospital for the 1st 2 yrs. after graduation. My parents live in Hendricks county and Dad had CABG at St. Vincent's on 86th street.
I was considering working the weekend option at one of the hospitals in Indy and staying w/ my parents. Do you think this is a good plan? Or am I just whistling in the wind?
Thanks!!

That's interesting. Here in the atlanta area, we had a hospital that was purchased by Columbia HC and then was shut down w/in a year or two. This was back mid-90's.
