Hospital food

This is a little on the lighter side than most topics.

when helping a Pt eat and encouraging them to eat their meal do you ever think "your food looks disgusting, and the smell makes me gag" while you are telling them "your food smells so good and you should try and eat some so that you can get the nutrients and start feeling better"

I think this ever time i set up the meal try that the food looks gross.

what do you think?

A little off subject here but I heard on the news just yesterday that Hospital Cafeteria food is much higher in saturated fats and sugars than any school cafeteria food, fast food chains or greasy spoons along the interstate!

Hospital food is horrible. When will they ever learn?!?!? When my dh was recuperating from an appendectomy I brought him food from home. The first day I was still disorganized and he ate what they served him, and was in agonizing pain afterward!

I'd rather eat shoe leather than hospital food.

They have to try really HARD to make it taste that bad. :angryfire

The desserts are pretty good, i would always eat the cake, italian ice, or ice cream if dietary delivered a tray that wasnt needed, and I got to it before it melted. I wouldnt touch anything else though.

the food where I work is fairly good I have to admit and the pts. tell me theirs is good. Esp the roast beef and Pasta

My advise- avoid the shepherd's pie

LOL....good one.

I actually worked at a hospital where the food was pretty darned good. Then I was a pt at UCSF with my dad (living donor transplant) and while the food in the cafeteria was pretty good, the pt food was *blech*. Even my dad, who has a cast iron stomach and can eat anything after 30 years in the army, couldn't eat it.

My dh was hospitalized for CV observation, and you should have seen the mystery plate he was served. I have absolutely no idea what this thing was. It looked a bit like a pot pie, but filled with some type of meat in some form that just looked disgusting. He said it tasted bad, too. I can't begin to imagine that this was a heart healthy meal. For one thing, one of the things that made it all so mysterious was the gravy bath in which it was submerged.

I think there is some kinda rule that only cooks with public school experience (and poor evaluations) can work in hospital kitchens.

Pureed food is nasty.

I've noticed that patients tend to get fatter when they come to the hospital. But there may be other reasons (like access to the snack machines and sharing food).

Sorry, I'm too lazy to type anything of substance right now...
