Hi guys, pls I have been beating myself up and continue to do so. I do not need judgmental condescending people to add to my stress level right now. Only sound advice please. And I want to say thank you In advance to those welcomed comments. Thank you.
So i am a travel nurse. I recently failed my pre-admission drug screen. +THC. I lost my contract, and the agency dropped me. It's a big agency, so I understand what that really means. I am told I will be reported to the BON. So my questions are:
1) How important is it for me to be open and honest with this next recruiter in another agency? Should I let him know about the positive test? How will telling him or not telling him affect me?
2) the agency that dropped me, has me out here stranded and broke. They told me they won't reimburse my travel expenses. And I'm locked down in housing as I have already paid for the month. Is there anything I can do about getting my travel reimbursement back?
3) I know Texas is very strict on a lot of things, so how strict will the BON be in my case. No prior tint on my license.
4) should I be proactive and contact IPN myself?
Anything information you could throw my way will help a lot. Please and thank you.
I agree with the advise about getting a monitoring friendly job now that your license is still clean. I wouldn't tell them either if it were me. You can tell them later when you have to. But in the meantime, dialysis is an especially good specialty as once you have experience you will be in high demand and they are used to dealing with people in monitoring programs. I am from another state but I knew someone who got a dialysis job and then when the time came and she had to tell them she is in a monitoring program they did keep her on.
Many states have a deal where the discipline is not public and won't show up on your license if you self report but some want you to do it immediately and most have other restrictions. Some tell you that you can't work as a nurse for a period of time. I have no idea about Texas. Call a lawyer or look online if you can find info. Here's a good link...
Welcome to TPAPN - Texas Nurses Association
You can try to call them anonymously and see if they'll answer questions.
It's legal in a few states. Not sure how it works with your license, maybe you could see about getting licensed in one of those states since it's not considered criminal.
Totally irrelevant that marijuana is legal in any state. It is a federally controlled substance and it's use subject to criminal prosecution.
Also, no BON will allow use of marijuana by its licensees.
And also, no reputable healthcare employer will hire or retain an employee who uses an illegal controlled substance while on duty.
Marijuana and Nursing do not mix.

That's not 100% accurate. In California where we have medical marijuana clinics they actually encourage you to try the product so you will understand why you are recommending it. I don't personally use weed but have a friends MDs, PAs and NPs who work in these clinics. I'm sure it varies from state to state.

NOT true.
From the Oregon Board of Nursing:
1) Does having a medical marijuana card prevent me from getting licensed in Oregon?
No. The Board does not ask an applicant to disclose their medical marijuana card or prescribed medications on the application for licensure. However, it is every licensee and certificate holder's responsible (sic) to ensure that their use of medical marijuana does not impair their ability to practice safely.
Basically, employers can hold a zero tolerance policy towards marijuana use medically or recreationally but the board with only take action if it can be proven that it was impairing the nurse while on duty.

California and Washington will most likely be adopting similar policies. And of course you are forgetting the entire country of Canada.

Well, I stand corrected.
Based on the increase in "impaired driving" accidents in the state of Washington, I don't think it is a good idea to wait for an incident of "impaired nursing" to take action. How can you ****** prove it was the use of marijuana that caused the impaired nursing????

Same way we do for alcohol. Create a standardized blood THC limit based on body weight. Over the limit you are likely currently high and feeling the effects. Under the limit you most likely are not.
Its going to happen sooner or later due to increased recreational usage and legalization.
There's a scary thought....
It's ok. I find the American corporate culture where employers are allowed to test you for smoking, drugs and alcohol on a whim terrifying. I Don t think you should be penalized for what you do on your own time, as long as it doesn't impair your patient care. Canada isn't the first country to legalize marijuana
