Before you rush off to the pharmacy to get meds filled with side effects, what are some natural grandma remedies do you know of...please share. I'll go first.
For Arthritis pain:
My mom and I use this remedy all the time and it works.
In Germany we used vicks or mintoil as pneumonia prophylaxis on almost all of our patients.
For ear infections my grandma would mash boiled potatoes and put them warm in a handkerchief on our ears, it sure helped ease the pain.
I also have used plain yogurt applictions lady partslly for yeast infections, successfully.
For warts I had a red slug crawl over warts on my feet! It was the grosest feeling but something in the slime must have done the job.
For hickups: give the person a glass of water, have them hold their breath and gulp it while you squeeze both of their earlobes. It works every time, might be related to accupressure points.
My dh is Mexican and swears by chamomile tea for anything between your neck and your bum that ails you.
We use cinnamon tea a lot for colds - but ground up fresh cinnamon works best.
A lot of Mexican women use drops of breastmilk in the eye if their babies get pinkeye. We tried it when ds was little....I imagine if I had good aim, it might have worked...the visuals make me laugh even now. We just gave up and took him to the doc. But a LOT of people I know swear by it.
My dh also believes that Vicks VapoRub is the nectar of the gods. He will put it on dang near anything that hurts. Must work, 'cause he wakes up the next AM better.
Vinegar neutralizes jelly fish stings.
Tobacco on a bee sting.
Pee on a bull nettle sting.
Aloe Vera for sunburns.
Walnut to get rid of a wart.
Baking soda works great to keep my problematic skin clear of acne.
Once had a very eccentric Dr order " crate myrtle twig dipped in cinnamon for smoking cessation"
Oh, I forgot about thrush! Gentian violet clears it up in no time flat. One of our sons had chronic ear infections as a baby and he battled thrush every time he started another round of antibiotics, Nystatin did nothing to help. A little purple in the mouth and it was all gone every time. Of course, all of his toys and clothes got covered in purple as he drooled it out, but it was worth it!
Yogurt cleared up my daughters thrush. I forgot about Gentian violet.
another constipation remedy, when all else fails, is 'vaseline cookies'...you roll little balls of vaseline (marble size) in sugar onto a cookie sheet, then place in freezer. take a few of these, swallow, then, voila!
I don't mean to be rude, but I just puked a little in my mouth over that one!
My mom's side of the family is Pennsylvania Dutch and French Hugonaut, my dad's is Swedish and Irish Catholic, so I have some interesting remedies...
~ My favorite, prepare Jell-o (not the sugar free) according to package directions, but use two cups of hot water instead of half hot and half cold, then drink the stuff...it's the best thing for nausea/vomiting. It coats the stomach, provides sugar and if you have to throw it up, it comes up easy and doesn't taste bad. (Sorry, I bet I made a few of you vomit a little in your mouths!)
~ Clear nail polish also works for chigger bites.
~ For a sore throat, pour honey into boiling water, then squeeze a lemon into it and let the lemon soak in the mixture. It tastes pretty gross, but gosh darn it, it works!
~ I swear by a hot water bottle in bed for menstrual cramps.
~ Also, we can't forget the humidifier/vaporizer for congestion.
~ Hot water is, I think, the basis for most of my remedies. I think the best cure for cramps is a steaming hot bubble bath, a Jack Daniels Lynchberg Lemonade and a good book. It kicks Midol's butt any day!
~ For a sunburn, draw a very warm bath and add a bunch of tea bags, then stay in for as long as you can.
~ Mosquito bite? Roll-on deodorant applied topically works. (Just don't apply it if you've scratched one open).
~ If you feel like you have to burp but it won't come out (a colicky kind of indigestion), suck on a candy cane.
~ Whenever I go to the beach, I rub my skin with sand then rinse it off with sea water. It's a great exfoliant.
