Where to get these certifications?

Hi guys!!

I just started working on a medical/surgical floor but I have many interests at heart. I want to be certified in different holistic practices (meditation, holism and wellness, etc) and I am also interested in nutrition, health and wellness. If you guys can paste links or give me any information as to where to get these certifications , it would be greatly appreciated! Even if there are other certifications that I haven't listed, I will also consider those too!

Thank you! Xoxo

Specializes in ICU.

I would ask your employer if they even allow you to do any of that stuff. I had a job that let us do aromatherapy once, but you had to get checked off on it and the provider had to have an order that it was okay for a patient to receive aromatherapy. Not much point in getting certified in anything if your work doesn't let you do it, IMO.

Things like meditation and holistic stuff you're just going to have to Google for your area and see what you find. You can usually take courses in nutrition at universities/community colleges.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Academics.

If you just started your first job on a med-surg floor, I suggest that you get acute care nursing down pat prior to seeking cents in the "extras." There are many opportunities to do health promotion and teaching in acute care through patient education, and your focus will depend on where the patient is at during the hospital stay. Right now, just concentrate on becoming a nurse.

I have no intention to sound negative or condescending with this post--and I apologize in advance if it does sound that way--but you've got time to explore the options you seek as your competency grows.

The first step is identifying the professional organizations that govern those specialties, become involved in them, and then gain experience.

Specializes in Pedi.

I got certified in Reiki from my original hospital. They offered complimentary/alternative therapy courses a few times/year. Somehow I convinced them to pay for it and to pay me an education day for the day I took the class.

Specializes in Med-Surg., Oncology, Observational Units.

I would consider posting this under the Holistic Nurse Forum on this website under specialties. You will get better feedback on this topic there. This is a vast topic and could go in a million directions. Generally, what makes people WELL will be found outside of the hospital setting.

Hope this helps!
