Hey...so i went to this nurse recruitment thing the other night at the hopital I work at......and boy, I was almost embarrassed to say that I work there! They did this western themed thing and all the mangers/team leaders were dressed in blue jeans/bandanas/dollar store cowboy hats, etc. And kept referring to events in western themes..."let's hit the trail..." for tours of units. And they didn't let us go to more than 1 floor...they did these hokey presentations of line-dancing and stories round the campfire....etc.
My thought is that compared to the last one I went to (Where we could tour more than one floor, during the entire 3 hours.....and the mangers answered all our questions, and we didn't have to sit through these lloooonng speeches....) Why don't hospitals think that students care about being professionals? I felt that they disserviced the image of nurses at the hospital, and didn't care if someone was between 2-3 units of interest.....and before someone says for me to grow a funnybone...I did enjoy parts of the evening...(watching my manager have to line dance....heard she lied to new grads about n/p ratio.....winning a travel bag and a 1/2 FREE massage at the health center...) any thoughts? Are most recruitment things like that?
This seems to be a common theme in alot of health systems...making the managers look stupid and thinking the staff will appreciate it. For example, if we exceed our United Way goal, our CEO will run a 5k in a pink tutu. The next year he went around in costume singing stupid songs. I'd pr"efer if he did some community service instead of this "elementary school reward".
what I dont understand is how can anyone take these people seriously after a display like that? I'd find it a bit insulting. This is a hospital- a serious place- there is no room for funny haha. maybe thats why there is no respect between management and nurses. If they wanted to recruit me, if they put on a nice luch and didnt lie thru their teeth about appropriate staffing and ratios, and some actual support,; thats all i would want from a recruiter.

Yeah....Sorry, I just read my OP (after working) and saw I left out the 1/2 hour part of the massage.....I would wonder if it was top half or bottom half....
Seriously, though, I was thinking in my head "good lord, just let me go talk to the people I want to talk to." Thank goodness I'm assertive, and willing to go up to complete strangers and find the managers in the units I'm looking at applying to. I talked to cardiac cath lab leader, the LTC leader, the cardio ICU manager, and the neuro ICU leader....so they at least got to talk to me.
Overall, I felt like I was at some stupid "flair" orientation....I flashed back to "Office space". Hey, the more flair, the more tips! glad to see it's not just me.
