I am an alternate for HCC Dale Mabry campus. I am not yet in the program. This is my third time as an alternate, so; I don't want to be too optimistic. I found out that starting last week the school was going to be notifying alternates if they have a spring 2009 seat. I am wondering if anyone has heard that they are in yet. I am very nervous, and I would appreciate any information. Thank you
Well, like you said everything happens for a reason! Let's vow together that we will both give it a try and apply for the spring semester! I am willing to give it one last try and then, I think I'm done with HCC! haha. See the thing is, I lack only one more class(humanties) plus the actual program and then I can officially graduate so a part of me is like apply again because if not, would that mean I have to start all over should I chose to go somewhere else? I don't know, lots of praying to do!
Congrast to everyone who got in. Unzie, thanks for posting your gpa. It seems that the cut off was higher than the last 2 semesters.
booke24, don't give up. You were wise to apply to Erwin. My daughter goes to HCC, she is very young and getting As seems to me more difficult for the younger student. She took the TABE at Erwin last week and scored 12.9. Her letter came yesterday that she made good scores and she is to show up at orientation in May.
The way I understand it is that this gurantees you a spot, the lottery is just to assign to you which class you will be in. i.e August this year or next year Jan or March.
I spoke to B Labarar last week and she said that there will be one more requirement for the program but she will only announce it at orientation so everyone can hear it at the same time. Here's to hoping that yo get in Aug.
I would enroll in their LPN program and just bridge over to HCC in the transitional course. That only starts in May but still apply in May for the Jan HCC class and if yo aren't acceted, move on to Erwin. It is easier to get in as a LPN gpa wise...I believe it is also less competitive.
Hi... I got my letter today. It says I'm an "alternate". Ugh do I feel really bad. I felt like ripping it up. Then I wanted to sleep all day. My gpa is 3.55. I don't know what my chances are of getting in but I am not wasting any time and just submitted my admissions application for pcc online. This just doesn't seem right. There is a "nursing shortage" but so many willing and able performers who are turned down. What the hell? Excuse my cyber cursing but I am kind of angry/sad today.
Thanks so much NewGoalRN:wink2:. I know not to give up, I have no doubt that I am suppose to be a nurse. See, the devil is a liar, he seeks that all men be miserable like unto himself. If we get turned down by a job, a school, ect he hopes that we feel sorry for ourselves and bummed out. I too will be assisting the meeting in May and be it God's will I will be placed in one of three classes. I will also apply once more to HCC but will also apply elsewhere. The Lord says we're saved after all we can do and I know that If I "Pray as if it all depends on God, and work as if it all depends on me" He will provide the way. I wokeup this morning more determined than ever and will begin my planning. It is true, there is such a great "shortage" of nursing but people, good people are turned down left and right. What the government needs to do is stop worrying about these retarded AIG people and help our healthcare students and future nurses and doctors who keep their people healthy!
Amen!
Wow.... the cut must be way higher than usual. A 3.55 as an alt! I have not seen that since i started looking at cut off GPA's. NewGoal's advice of getting your LPN and then bridging to RN was a great idea! The bridge program at HCC is only 1 year, and I think it takes only 1 year to get yout LPN! Since your pre-req's are done, your grad date will be about the same in the end! (Some LPN's need to take a few pre-reqs' before applying to the bridge program). Remember, anyway worth having, its not easy to get.......... so don't give up! Good Luck Booke24!
Wow I am sorry to hear that some of you did not get accepted or are alternates. I can't believe that a 3.55 GPA is putting you as an alternate. I did hear that nursing school applications were up 60% (like we need anymore competition at this point!!!). If anyone does find out what the minimum GPA was for the Fall 2009 semester, I would love to know.
-Jacquie
WHY is the GPA cutoff such a secret? I don't understand that. This is what the letter says, "The Health Sciences Admissions Committe has reviewed all applications for the Fall 2009 Nursing Basic or Basic Night/Weekend Program. Based on your prerequisite GPA, you have been selected as an Alternate. If accepted into this program, you will be contacted by letter sent to the address on the Health Sciences application. If this information has changed, please contact...
If you believe there has been an error on our part, you may appeal the committee's decision. You are required to meet with a Counselor, and bring with you a written request for an appeal."
They don't tell me what they calculated my gpa to be nor do they tell me what the cut off gpa was. So I wrote the dept and got no answer. So how am I to appeal if I don't know what totals they used to base their decision? Ugh this is so frustrating. According to hawknet in my Health Sciences courses, I scored an "institutional gpa of 3.55". Double UGH! I guess I am to meet with a couselor and take their word for it that they know the "secret gpa cutoff".

Are you sure? I always thought that HCC's gpa floor is around 3.2. Was the 3.55 gpa your program gpa or cummultive gpa? I can't believe that you would not have been accepted with a program gpa of 3.55.
the program gpa consists of grades for the following classes:
English 1
AP1 w lab
AP2 w lab
Micro w lab
Sociology
College Algebra
