I am an alternate for HCC Dale Mabry campus. I am not yet in the program. This is my third time as an alternate, so; I don't want to be too optimistic. I found out that starting last week the school was going to be notifying alternates if they have a spring 2009 seat. I am wondering if anyone has heard that they are in yet. I am very nervous, and I would appreciate any information. Thank you
Hmm...I guess that makes sense that you can only retake if it was a D or an F. Kind of a shame though, I did horrible my first couple of years of college (I already have a BA from almost 10 years ago), and luckily none of those courses were ones looked at for Nursing. Although that is the reason I couldn't even be considered for USF's nursing program...my cumulative GPA was too low and that was all they considered. I have an insane ## of credits from 4 different schools, so there was no way to even bring it up. What makes it even funnier is that I have an MA from there-but they told me not to even consider applying for the nursing program.
I'm really hoping for you that you make it in this class!
OK everyone here is the latest:
a) they will be deciding on alternates in mid april
b) they do NOT contact alternates if they do not make it
c) gpa cutoff is 3.429
d) not all alternates make it in and never have in the past
e) you can not retake a course if it is a C or higher
f) Many students have an identical prerequisite gpa. With identical grades, the
overall or cumulative gpa is used to break the tie
g) the Nursing Program typically receives better than 450 applications for approximately 120-130 seats
That is all the research I did today. I corresponded with a counselor at Dale Mabry. I am now officially burnt out and ready to redirect my career to grocery bag packing. I hope I get accepted to that. Paper or plastic?
Well, keep the faith that they will have people who will not accept the acceptance for various reasons. I know that it is stressful but think positive. I see that Erwin Tech is now instituting the TEAS exam. When I called this week, they said that they got so many qualified applicants for the LPN program that they will not be able to offer a seat to everyone.
Then I see that PHCC has 'lowered' the standards for their RN program. Tell me that this isn't a way to rack up more money from application fees! where have you seen a program that only requires ap1 w/lab, nutrition, eng 1 and psych to apply- no math, no ap2, no micor, ridiculous!
I will be sending positive thoughts your way.
Regarding retaking cources with grades above a D, you generally can't. HOwever, if you get a Dean who is not paying attention or is sympathetic, once in a while they will sign off based on the reason. Iknew a few people who got to retake but the majority are told no.
However,r etaking would take you to Fall 2010 program- that is a year out. Keep the faith. YOu are very close to the cut off. When I calculated your gpa, it was around 3.428- check my post from Sunday. You have a very good chance of getting in.
Hi all how has everyone been? I actually haven't been on this thing in quite a while. I hope those who are in nursing school and those preparing for the upcoming semester are preparing and do well. To those of us who are still fighting the good fight we will not give up! I read the past correspondance about even the LPN program being highly competitive to get into. It seems like everywhere you turn everyone is trying to get into the healthcare field. I took the TABE test not too long ago and will be attending the meeting next month and am keeping my fingers crossed. I hate that they select students with a lottery system...what are the odds! My only concern is that should I go to Erwin and then try to bridge over, although all my pre-req classes were taken with HCC, will the grades I made at HCC determine my entrance into the RN program or will my overall GPA from Erwin count towards my entrance into HCC's RN program? I know i had so many run-ons and sentence fragments but, that's why I'm not studying English! hahah
hi everyone,
i'm new here. what a great site!
i am planning to apply to the spring 2010 hcc nursing program.
i am just finishing up my pre-requisites this semester.
i have been reading all of your posts and have gotten so many of my questions answered already but i do have a few more questions. one of by biggest concerns about nursing school is that i really don't have any medical experience. it seems like a lot of nursing students were cnas first or did something in a medical setting. do you think not having worked in a medical setting will make nursing school more difficult for me? i did volunteer in a hospital for a couple of years and loved it, but that is not the same as getting the experience of working in the medical field. my other question is, do i need my cpr certification before i apply or just by the time the program starts?
thanks so much for any opinions or info! :wink2:

Unfortunately 427 I heard the same thing. You can't retake a course unless you get a "D" or below (At HCC anyway). A girl I took AP II with got a D and they are letting her retake it so I know the "D" thing is right. I am pretty sure the cut off will drop down to normal next class...this was just unusually high for a cut off. I can't see it lasting. If all you ave's dont pan out I'm sure you can requset for your application to carry over and in the Spring 2010 you will get a seat!!!!!!!!
Best of Luck
