Hillsborough Community College-Fall 2014

Published

Hello everyone,

So my dream since I can remember has been to become a nurse; however, it seems as if it will never happen. I recently finished my pre-requisite courses to apply to the fall semester of the HCC nursing program. While I did not get any C's I made mostly B's :blink:earning A's in two classes and one lab. I realize this is not good enough since it puts my GPA at around a 3.38. Since I did not fail any of my classes, I don't believe I will be able to retake them. Is there any possible way to retake them? Or any way to increase my GPA since they mainly look at the pre-requisite courses? If not, what other options do I have for becoming a nurse? If anyone is out there who could offer any help it would be greatly appreciated. I will submit my application regardless but I don't have any high hopes of getting accepted, if there is anyway to increase my chances I would be so grateful to find out!

If you go to the health science counselor at HCC in the tech building she will give you a paper that lists all of the classes you need for your BSN at USF. It really clarifies things. Thank you for the information :)

Ok thank you... ill go next week when class is back in session. Is it different then the above? Because I spent hours organizing the classes the way it would work for me going forward for the next 3 years lmao...

I used to work at my Alma Mater's Transfer Services Office and dealt with issues like this all the time. Between that and my 200+ undergrad credits over my entire college career, I've read so much about this stuff it's scary. ^_^

Want to say one thing about the Foreign Language though: For a BA, it is an ENTRANCE requirement. For a BS, e.g. a BSN, it is an EXIT requirement (to graduate). In short, Florida law won't allow graduates to leave without two semesters of it.

U are absolutely correct. . And I hated that the advisor responding to my emails said nothing about it. Grr. So once I did my research I was able to find that out

Hello Sana214....I will send you the immunization form. Its a good idea to get started on that as soon as you can to get it out of the way. There will be alot to do once you guys receive your acceptance letters. Good Luck....Get plenty of rest and enjoy your summer break because once you guys start its going to be non stop work, work, and more work all semester.

Thanks P90X3_PRO for sending me the form. I will get started on getting all of my shots taken care of. Any other things you can suggest I get out of the way now? I would appreciate any pointers. :)

Hey Im new to this thread and can you send me the form as well. I would appreciate it and my email is [email protected] :)

Hello Nursinghopeful. I think someone else all ready gave this advice but I've heard that there are fewer applicants that apply in the Spring. I think you have a good chance of getting accepted but that could be the backup plan. Also you could look into being an LPN first at a tech school then doing an RN bridge program. I was looking at schools in FL as I am originally from Orlando but currently living in the NE. Florida unfortunately lacks many Night & Weekend programs like we have here....except HCC. The only way I could stay working was do an LPN program first which is available at a reasonable cost at the tech school in the evenings then do an LPN-RN bridge program. I've found some online bridge programs so I could work as an LPN and take classes online to finish up the RN. Just another backup thought.

Hi Sana214....Depending on your Pre-Req GPA. If you feel confident that you have a good chance of being accepted, it would be a good idea to start learning how to think as a nursing student. Nursing school is a TOTALY different BEAST. Applying critical thinking & rationales are the foundation of nursing school. Almost every test question has 2 or more correct answer and you must use critical thinking to choose which answer takes priority over the other. Its NOTHING like what you are doing now in your regular classes. Go to Barns & Nobles or Amazon and buy the "Fundamentals Success Applying Critical Thinking to test taking" book by Patricia M Nugent & Barbera A. Vitale. Read that book over the summer to get yourself familiar with the type of questions you will be seeing once you start the program. Other then that just try to relax and enjoy your time off this summer. Spend as much time with the people in your life that are important to you and enjoy yourself. Nursing school is VERY demmanding and your free time will be extreamly limited once you start.

****Also, for all those 4.0 students out there that think they know everything, get ready for a wake up call. Nursing school has a way of humbling you real fast as it did to me. Forget about getting an A, B, or C, in nursing school its all about getting your points and reaching that magic # 285pts so you can move on to the next class. :) Good Luck..

Thank you so much @gygges597 for your encouraging words. If I get denied this time for fall, I will try again in the spring and if I get denied then as well, I will definitely look into an LPN program, I have ben researching it a bit as well. It is a last option, something I would not necessarily want to do but if thats the way to become an RN then I will definitely do it that way !
