Hijacking The Class

Published

Ok, now I understand that not everyone learns at the same level but give me a break. This person is seriously starting to get on everyone's nerves.

I would not be so frustrated except for the the fact that if the person would just shut up she might actually hear what the instructors were saying and what they were saying needed to be corrected on lecture notes that were handed out. They are so busy running their mouth to prove how smart they are or to try to prove the instructors wrong that they are no longer paying attention to the lecture. I can tell you one instructor said three times "I don't know why I put that under care plans and not nursing interventions so make sure you change that in the notes..." and this person after running their mouth for 5 minutes raised their hand and said "where are you at on the notes you handed out?" This person does this every day!!!! I swear I heard someone say "I am about ready to throw something sharp and pointy at them if they don't shut up!" I get it we are all stress out. For Gods sake I had a patient die while in clinical this week!! (Before you start thinking uh oh, they passed after a very long illness)

Now I will admit I would be suspicious if it was just me, but everyone in the class feels this way. This person starts to talk and you can hear a collective HEAVY sigh.:banghead: The other day they went so far as to hijack the class for so long that we ran 30 minutes over and the instructor still did not finish the lecture.

I guess what I am asking is what should we do as a class? There is a suggestion box in and some of us are really tempted to write down "tell this person to shut up!" It is reaching a point where the instructors are pulling the menu act. You know when they ask a question and this person raises her hand they put the menu up in front of their face like if I can't see them, then they can't see me. We are all trying to be really patient with this person, but we are really tired of it. We have spoken to them about maybe approaching the instructor after class to ask their questions and make their arguments then so that we can all learn from the lecture and it has only seemed to make matters worse.

Help!!

I think not the class, but the instructor himself needs to clearly ask this person to save all the questions until AFTER the lecture. I have been in a class with the same situation, where the instructor took control of the situation and it never happened again.

I don't think there is much you can do. This person is a paying student, and has a right to ask as many questions as he or she wants. I know what you mean, though. We had one just like that in my class, and she was so annoying. We just all got used to it and dealt with it.

The thing is that the instructors have stopped calling on this person and they will just talk over people. They have tried ignoring this person, calling on other students and even going so far as to say "someone other than..." and they just don't get it.

I would say maybe I am just being overly sensitive because it is the end of a very long week but other students approach me asking me to say something to this person and all I can tell them is it is not my place.

Should we approach the instructor as a class with this. People are trying not to sit next to this person so that they are not associated with them or distracted by their constant motor mouth action. All I can remember is the student in grade school that was separated by a partition from the rest of the class because they could not stop talking.

I should also say that I have spent time outside of class with this person and they are not the same outside of class.

I truly like this person in any other setting but class. I have tried saying something to them and they laugh it off like it is a joke. When they screw up in clinicals they laugh like it is no big deal and I think that is what makes me the most angry. When you screw up in clinicals and it effects everyone's schedules because you think you are more important it is not funny.

Screwing up in clinicals and laughing it off?? Yeah, that's real smart. Will that person be laughing also when they later screw up on the job and get fired? Or worse, get someone killed? How stupid. But I do think you need to approach the instructor as a class. I understand that the student has the right to ask questions cause they paid for the class, but so did the other students, and they also have the right to make their monies worth by getting the most out of the lecture - they paid for the class and are there to learn! Not to listen to some dumb ass questions!

A loud sigh and attempting to hang myself from my desk usually does the trick. If it doesnt, asking a similar yet exaggerated question with an air of sarcasm might work. some people just like to hear themselves talk.

I had a guy like that in microbio. He never asked anything pertaining to the class though, it was like he was trying to flirt with the teacher or something. Once he wouldnt stop yapping on about how he can cuss in so many different languages, so I asked if he knew how to shut up in any of them.

I think we can all relate to your situation. You're lucky you just have one person in your class that behaves in that manner. I can think of at least five people in my class that always manage to disrupt an instructor's lecture. One time the professor actually told one of them to "take a chill pill and relax". The whole class started laughing and that person got embarrassed and didn't say a single thing for the rest of the lecture. :p

Agree with a group of students approaching the instructors! I think there is one in every class! :banghead:

You and your fellow students should get together and come up with a plan to filibuster this pain. Whenever they raise their hand, most of the remainder of the class should do the same and make a big deal of the fact that you each want to be called on. Say something really blunt when the instructor calls on you, like "I'm so glad that I get the chance to ask my question TOO". Several days of this will get a response from the instructor. Maybe they will take charge of the situation. At any rate, if the lecture is going to be interrupted, at least there will be equal opportunity interruption. Sooner or later the pain should see that they are no longer going to monopolize the class.

Oh, I forgot to add: When you make your comment, go out of your way to turn your head and shoot a dirty look at the pain. All of you should do this.

Hahaha! LOL!:lol2: I love these responses! :rotfl: I am dying laughing in my chair now! :roll
