If you have not done anything in terms of immigration, then yes, the visas are altready gone for you.
You are definitely going to need to wait for the next iset to be released.
Not sure at all when that will be, not expected to sometime next year. This is an election year here, so nothing is going to get done until after elections and the new Congress is seated, if even then.
More visas for nurses to work in the US is not an emergency in Congress.
Please take the time toi do some reading here, and get your documents and exams completed while you are waiting. There is nothing else that can be done for you right now.

But who are really affected by the retrogression? I am waiting for my new interview date and I fear that I might be included in the casualties of this retrogression. Some say you are not to worry once your papers are in the embassy already while my agent told me that as long as you did not get to be interviewed, you won't be spared. Would that mean that my papers will be stranded in the embassy's office for the next 3 - 5 years? That's how long they project retrogression to last. I'm really confused.

Officially, retrogression will last that long.
But that is not the reality. The reality is that congress will be forced to act during FY2007 to set aside visa numbers for Schedule A occupations. We are hoping this to happen just like in 2005.

No one really knows who will be affected but like the others have said hopefully like last year some more visas will be released.
