The nurse calculates Mary's intake and output (I&O) for the shift. Mary has had 24 ounces of water, 8 ounces of apple juice, and three 4-ounce cartons of milk. She received 50 mL of IV fluids per hour for the last 12 hours and had a urinary output of 1200 mL, plus one episode of wetting the bed.
What is Mary's total intake for this shift?
I tried this problem and got 1901.2ml but it was wrong. I also tried 1902ml, 1901ml. Can anyone help explain to me what I did wrong and help me solve it? I have no idea what I could be doing wrong. The answer must be in milliliters.

You're so close to the right answer. Write out what you did, and I will see if I can help you.

Approx how many mL are in one ounce?
Then set up your list.
24 oz x ____mL/oz=A mL
3 x 4oz x ____mL/oz =B mL
8oz x _____ mL/oz = C mL
12h x 50mmL/hr = D mL
Total intake = A + B + C + D
You are close.

Since mL to oz is a whole number, I'm thinking maybe you used the incorrect conversion factor. Justbeachy is right on the money. What conversion factor are you using?

know what conversion factors they are using.....here are some site with common ones
Medical Calculations and Conversions
Health Care: Common Conversion Factors
Weight
1 kilogram (kg) = 2.2 pounds (lb) = 1000 g
1 lb = 454 g = .454 kg = 16 oz
kg x 2.2-5 = kg
lb x 0.454 = kg
1 oz = 28.349 g
1 g = 1000 mg
oz = 28.349 = g
g x 0.935 = oz
Liquids
1 oz = 30 milliliters (ml)
1 tbsp = 3 teaspoons (tsp) = 15 ml
1 tsp = 5 ml
2 tbsp = 1 fl oz
4 tbsp = 1/4 c = 2 oz
1 ml = 1 cc
1 cup © = 8 fl. oz = 16 tablespoons (tbsp) = 1/2 pt
2 c = 16 fl oz = 1 pt = 1/2 qt
4 qt = 1 gal
1 L = 1000 ml
Length
1 m = 3.281 ft = 39.37 in.
in. x 25.4 = mm
in. x 2.54 = cm
mm x 0.0394 = in.
cm x 0.394 = in.
ft x 0.305 = m
m x 3.281 = ft
m x 1.094 = yd
yd x 0.914 = m
Volume
US fl gal x 0.833 = UK gal
US fl oz x 1.041 = UK fl oz
US fl oz x 29.572 = ml
l (litre) x 1.056 = US fl qt
US fl qt x 0.947 = l (litre)

I use mnemonics to help me remember the more common conversion factors since I had problems keeping the numbers straight at first.
30 monkeys laughed at 1 old zebra and if you eat 2 turkeys you are going to need 6 tums
30 mL = 1 oz = 2 Tbsp = 6 tsp
Since both turkeys and tums begin with t you might say it could be confusing, but turkeys are larger than a bunch of tums just like tablespoons are larger than teaspoons.
Hope that helps

I love mnemonics. Thanks for this!

What were you using as your conversion? You are very close to the correct answer.

Don't muddy the waters, guys-the only formula you need to know for this particular answer is 30ml=1oz.
Just 2 manipulations of that:
___ oz X 30 = ___ ml
___ ml / 30 = ___ oz
Just a little proud of my middle-aged brain; I can still do those problems in my head lol.
Tigerfly
1oz=30mL. 32oz water(32x30)=960mL plus 12oz apple juice(12x30)=360mL plus 4oz milk(4x30)=120x3 cartons=360mL for a total of 1680mL of oral fluids. 50mL x 12 =600mL IV fluids. so, 1680mL oral fluids plus 600mL of IV fluids equals 2280mL
Answer 2280

I know this is an old post, but the answer is 1920.
