I've never really heard much about it, but I have heard that LIU in itself is a good school?? is this true? please tell me what you know about the nursing program. how difficult is it to get into?

Can I ask you guys where some of your clinicals have been so far? Have you been in manhattan, or do you know of students ahead of you that have clinicals in manhattan? Are the assignments randomly chosen for a student?

not even the worst enemy??? damn...:stone i see where you're coming from though, my fellow liuer.

your opinion is definately the minority. i have learned a lot. i learned a lot from my the studying i do myself and the work that i have put in the books myself. there are a few professors that i have learned much from. however, i wouldn't even recommend this school to my worst enemy. thanx for the luck, me and my classmates will definately need it. :banghead:

clinicals are spread out over manhattan, brooklyn, and like 1 clinical site in queens, I wish you could choose where you go, but you can't really unless you want to rearrange your entire schedule just to go to a specific clinical site, you can't mix and match your courses and what times you want, they give you like 8 different schedules to pick from for each semester and about 2-3 contain wknd classes which nobody wants, we were supposed to register online but then that was canceled and we had to register in person, waiting on a long line, and I ended up getting a terrible schedule (wknd classes) :--(

Thats funny you say that because when I was in the office registering, girls kept coming by and asking the advisor what the hell was going on with WebCT, because they weren't able to register and were getting nervous. I was lucky enough to get my schedule week days only this semester, but who knows for the other three. Thanks for letting me know about the clinical sites though.

once you are accepted as a nursing student, you do not need to apply again to the professional phase. You just have to go the the nursing department and sign up to take the HESI. If you are starting in the fall, you can take the test in the fall, too. I haven't heard of anyone having problems signing up to take the exam earlier than normal. Just remember to keep a copy of your results to show to our advisor when you register for your nursing courses.

i just have a question, im still debating if i should even apply to nursing school...the process seems kind of retarded, i have taken all courses (pre reqs) and received excellent scores in them...i recently graduated LIU with my BS BIOLOGY, so would i apply for BSN in nursing? (given that i have taken the courses, i would jsut have to register for the nursing courses--if accepted right?)..and 2nd question is do i graduate with an RN liscenrue or do i graduate with a BSN and then sit for NCLEX to become an RN? and last-----i know Liu is messd up all together with the staff and all (i spent 4 yrs of hell there...) but is their degree coming out DUAL (for every state) or just for NY?

I can answer all of this.. I started LIU in 2006 and am currently in their Nursing program with 1 yr to go.. since you're a student with a bachelors degree already and from LIU you can get into the nursing program without taking anymore pre-reqs the pre-reqs for the nursing program are about 7 bio classes (chem + bio) 4 englishs, 2 math , 2 philosophy classes, 2 psychology classes, etc.. so yes you just apply to the nursing program and take the classes.. when you graduate.. you graduate with a BSN but you also have to take an NCLEX.. that's the only way to work as an RN, NCLEX is so you can have your RN license. Degrees whether bachelors, associates, masters etc.. are accepted in every state but your license will not.. just for example..say you become a licensed RN in NY state but you want to move to California or any other state, you would have to apply for reciprocity in the state that you are moving to, in order to practice as a nurse in that state. This applies for all states. If you want more info just go to the school website under nursing.. As a fellow LIU student. yes LIU is not a good school, I would go somewhere else for nursing... honestly. Bestest of luck

Would I recommend LIU? Not even as an April Fool's joke. But, I'm almost done so I might as well finish.

If LIU is a school you are interested in attending, I would suggest you go to the nursing department with your transcript in hand and speak to an advisor who can answer your questions better than I can. From experience,

if you already have a Bach degree, they will only be interested in whether or not you have the SON pre-reqs: A&P, Chemistry, Dev. Psych, and Statistics. Since LIU SON loves to change the rules at the drop of a hat (my classmates know what I mean), I suggest speaking to an advisor for the most up to date information.

Hewllo thanks for replying i really appreciate it, i know i shouldnt apply to liu, but im using nursing as last resort, i have no problem seeing myself as a nurse, im very on-top of my things i have heard of the bull-s that liu gives its students with regards to remaining in the program, in all honesty, i will not be one of those people...! so given i am even interested (for probably spring 2010) would i apply now? where do i go? (when i call lIU itself, they connect me to admissions, its like nursing doesnt even exist there...!) there is an enterrance exam i think? HESI(??) is their a book to study for it? and with regards to my GPA i have an overall 3.0 right now, i have taken classes like molecular bio and cell bio which brought my GPA down, but my regular science scores are ok, i am taking one class again, to which i know my GPA will boost up by many points! if not liu do u reccommend any other schools? (but lets stick to liu since i know all the profs)

First remember that knowing LIU professors isn't the same as knowing the SON professors. But anyway, you can apply online (application fee is waived, I think):

When it comes to the nursing department it's best to show up in person. Calling leads to....well, nowhere. And the HESI exam was easy, IMO. I'm not sure if there was a study book.

I have to agree with most of the posts. LIU is a horrible school and doesn't care about the students. I'm going on to my second semester and the only professor that I liked is the pharmacology professor her initials is F.I. The pathophysiology professor is clueless and reads right out of her notes. The only way to graduate is by teaching yourself the material. The nursing fundamentals tests are crazy and most of it is not what is covered in class. It's all critical thinking.

Wow, I applied to this school first and got accepted the same day. I hadn't realized how expensive it was.. (14,500.) for fall 09.. After all the grants I still could not afford it. So I applied to a cuny school (2,300). But after hearing what current students are saying im glad I'm not going there.

I was lucky to get a scholarship to help pay for LIU because tuition is crazy!
