what have you heard about LIU nursing program?

Published

I've never really heard much about it, but I have heard that LIU in itself is a good school?? is this true? please tell me what you know about the nursing program. how difficult is it to get into?

I actually thought they followed up better than other schools I dealt with. Whenever I've had to e-mail admissions they've gotten back to me within 48 hours. SUNY Downstate was a complete disaster, and NYU answered an e-mail of mine literally 3 months later.

That's odd about your friends situations. Maybe the friend with less pre-reqs applied earlier and they filled up their spots by the time the 3.4 GPA'er did so. It is a rolling admissions process. I applied in the Spring and after getting accepted, decided to defer until this Fall. I was actually worried they were gonna say something like "we actually don't have a spot for you", because I had read that when you defer some programs, you're not necessarily guaranteed a spot for the following semester.

You have to score a cumalitive of atleast 75% between over four sections: Reading Comp, Grammar, Math and Vocab. You're also tested on A&P, Chemistry and Biology. They see those scores too, but they aren't factored in. After taking the test you can see online how you did compared to the rest of the people that took the test along with you. It was clear that everyone studied for the first 4 sections and just kinda wanted to get the other sections over with.

I agree, a lot of students take this test before they finish taking Anatomy and Physiology lol because they want to get it over with so most don't care how they do on it.

I am currently a student in the LIU nursing program going into my last year, honestly I wouldn't recommened the program at all, the registration process is horrible, the new curriculum was not planned correctly. Nursing school is always very hard but at this school its ridiculous( even some prof agree)... I have like 3 exams this week no lie!!, one in which I have to get 100! ( a medication calculation exam) this nursing school is extremely disorganized and some faculty do not respect the students. Very easy to get in but challenging to graduate and not only because the material is alot to handle. I always heard that LIU was good, but now that I'm in it, I definitely would have went somewhere else and I'm one of the few who are passing, not worth $13k going on $15K a semester. People boast about the 95% NCLEX passing rate but the 50-60 who graduate out of the 200+ that start work hard for it and make their way through the crap the program throws so of course they'll pass. Just my two cents, I dont mean to discourage anyone, just wanted to tell it how most ppl in the program see it, best of luck in your searches!!

Okay you've officially scared the hell out of me.

I'm already registered for my nursing courses for fall '09. I have a previous BA from a college with a sub par administration, so in that sense, I'm sure to be on top/borderline annoying about getting everything I need from the faculty. As far as work load though, I guess I can't really be fully prepared for it until school starts..Ugh.

Not many people are happy with the nursing department, unfortunately. I think we are all miserable. When I say, it is always SOMETHING, it truly is ALWAYS something going on to frustrate the students even more. As a matter of fact, I don't know ANYONE who is happy. Can't go back in time, unfortunately.

don't be scared, I just wanted to give some info about how things are really going down in the program. To be fair the students with second degrees do better than the students straight outta H.S for alot of reasons. Don't be scared but be very prepared!! you'll see for yourself, when you start, hopefully your experience is better than mine and LIU gets their act together by fall for 190 level and my level!! greatest of luck to you!!

Is it specifically that you don't think the professors are helpful to you? Do you feel you're not learning what you need to be a successful nurse? I'm just trying to get a sense of what's making everyone so miserable beyond the fact that there's a sh*tload of work that they're strict about, because with Nursing School I've never heard of anyone saying they thought it was a breeze.

Well first registration for last semester and this semester was a disaster, everyone had to wait in line for atleast 2 hrs to register! and then re-register a third time. Some of our classes dont match our clinicals, learning one thing in class and something completetly different in clinical because the school didnt get correct hospital unit for clinical, exams every wk, almost twice weekly, some prof have major attitude with students, failed full-time students by mistake then made them go part-time, the list goes on, it's sad, I really don't want to scare you, there are ppl doing ok but there are ppl doing not ok, but most are dissappointed with the program.

Hmmm..the clinical/class learning confusion is scary because it's nothing you can personally do to fix it. The idea of clinicals make me nervous in general, as I'm sure they can with all new students.

When I registered recently, I registered for everything except for 190, because there was a mistake in the computer and it was automatically putting me into a Saturday class, when they're were clearly Tuesdays available. She said she would call me when the problem had been straightened out and she had registered me for Tuesday. Surprisingly she did get back to me the next day.

I appreciate the info, if anything I know I'll be at least a bit more prepared for what's to come..and that i may have to be a bit neurotic to make sure everything is taken care of while I'm a student there.

your welcome Riles, see you around next semester!!

Take it from a LIU alum. You will absolutely hate the school while going there but will realize once you have graduated how prepared you are. Prospective and current students must realize that there is no "hand holding" in this program. You have to want to learn and be willing to make sacrifices to accommodate your studies. If you are at a point in your life where you can't focus solely on your studies, then now is not the time to go to nursing school. Period. It is true that each semester approximately 100-200 students are admitted and by the end there is only 40-50 students left. There is a lot of work involved in any nursing program and only a short amount of time to get through it and not many people can get tolerate the related stress. But even with all that, it is still possible to graduate from LIU. So don't be discouraged: just remember that everything in your life is basically put on hold for 4 semesters while doing your nursing courses.

Don't let anyone fool u, this school has got to b the worst nursing school in NY state. They care soo much about their own and the pass rate its ridiculous. Its all about LIU not about the student while we r paying the 30K a year. I am second degree student and this made me realize what a good school my last school was. The teachers r mostly new becuz I here all the teachers leave when they realize how the students are treated. They give a hard ass med math exam that they only give you 3 tries each semester to get a 100% in. If you dont pass you have to sit out for a whole semester. Most of the teachers that they assign to help you prepare for the med math test can't even do the problems. They give a test every week rotating classes. Some of the teachers are so bad they might as well be online classes. Registration is a mess every semester with us standing outside the registration offices for hours just to get a wknd schedule. The tests are so hard that most teachers can't get them right when you ask them for their opinion. The highest grades are usually kin the low 80s. Keep in mind 76.45 is passing. The test always seem like they are made to trick you. The info that we r tested on usually hardly like the material they ask us to read/study. They change things during the semester when its convenient to them w/out our acknowledgment. Even the few people who are doing well in the program are fed up with LIU nursing. Anyone who goes there will regret it I know I did. If you dont believe ask anyone who is in this program now.The way I see it anyone who puts their mind to it and studies hard should pass the Nclex w/out relying on a school. The joke in the school is LIU has gave more people bad debt and has put more people in debt then the current economy becuz of the amount of people they failed out. Imagine leaving a school wit 30-45K worth of school debt without any degree. SCARY. I made a bad choice but I just hope I make it thru. Pray 4 me. P.S. Dont go to this school or I will be saying I told u so
