Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

*sigh*

not feeling too healthy today....just gonna take it easy and be good to myself.

Anyone here try Benefiber for upping their fiber? I mean, I love fruits and veggies, but to get the recommended fiber the diet, not that easy, even w/the fruits/veggies. It's pretty invisible and pretty easy to take. Do you use fiber supplements at all?

Thanks Tweety - I will keep my eyes peeled for some of that stuff, that's not a bad idea. I try to buy lean beef, but it is harder to find out here - maybe I need to make a trip to a real city and check out a health food store. Perhaps I can find organic that way. I will just have to make a plan to do that - closest one is two hours away, but if I plan it right and stock up, it would be worth it!

Sorry Deb, I have never tried the fiber supplements.

I am groggy as all get out today. Kids are both sick and both kept me up last night - one vomiting and the other just miserable. Yuck. Aside from that, we found some 'veggie chips' that are pretty good and moderately low carb, so that was a treat! :)

When I went on the diet I took Psyllium powder for a while (it the natural ingredient in Mettimucil without the extra coloring and stuff). But haven't tried the other.

Deb, you need about 25 to 30 gm a day. Maybe you should plug in your diet in fitday.com or another service to see if you're not getting it with your diet. With fruits, veggies and whole grains, I find it very easy to get 30 gm and then some. Being a vegetarian, fiber is the last concern I have. LOL

I'm off to yoga tonight.

Deb - praying for you to feel better, and rise above what's troubling your heart today. :kiss :flowersfo I've never taken any type of fiber other than the fiber that comes naturally in our food resources. Bananas and oatmeal block me up, so I eat popcorn to unblock me. Go figure. :rotfl: Drinking real orange juice with pulp used to help, but even it's failing me lately. :uhoh21: Hard getting enough veggies in this household unless I cook everyday. Once I start earning a paycheck, veggies and fruits are going to go wayyyyyyyyyy up in this house. :rotfl:

Sarah - sorry to hear the little ones are sick. Make sure you take care of you, too, because when mom's are sick, the whole house suffers. :icon_hug: :flowersfo

Tweety - I'd like to take up yoga again. Used to yoga years ago, but stopped yoga-ing when I hurt my shoulder. It was a fun and relaxing class though. The body positions that yoga teacher put herself in absolutely blew me away. I'd sit and watch her with an open jaw. :rotfl:

In case you all don't read about my good news on the GM thread, I got a job today at a private preschool academy. The pay put me into shock mode, but I'll survive. It's wayyyyyyyyyy lower than I expected, but it's wayyyyyyyy more than I've made in months, so it's a nice trade off for now. :D

renee, seeing your siggy line almost made me cry, remembering how in my darkest hour i flipped open my bible and that very passage leapt out at me. it was like a message from god and i keep repeating it to myself whenever i got scared or lonely.

now i celebrate the blessings that have come my way since then. i literally cannnot count them all, there have been so many! god is so good!

so i pray that this door--the new job--will open to some wonderful things for you as well.

bless you all today greatly in your healthy eating efforts!

(maybe i should change my name to the healthy thread lurker with dietary commitment issues....)

Hello all... it's been a bit since I've posted. Things in the healthier living area are relatively stable right now. Weight is maintaining... but I don't really mind. I'd lost about 4.5 lbs in a week which is quite a bit, so I figured if I can stay at this weight for a week or two without trying to lose then my body will hopefully adjust itself to the new "normal range." Still would like to drop another 5 lbs or so, but no rush. Haven't been great in the exercise arena. It's tough once you get out of the habit to get back in... but it's always a goal. Actually, though, I do need to look up some dance lessons for FH and me (so we don't looking like swaying zombies for our "first dance"), maybe we'll discover a passion for ballroom dancing and dance our way to fitness. Or something.

Tweety, I really wish I had a place to do yoga around here. There's a studio just down the hill from my house, but their last class starts at 6pm which is before I get home. Bummer, cause it would be fun.

Deb, so sorry for the things you are dealing with right now. You're in our thoughts. Hugs to you, my friend.

Sarah, good job on getting back to healthy eating. You will do great, I know. Hope the kiddos are feeling better soon.

Renee, again congrats on the job. I can understand your dismay at the pay, but as you said, it's more than you have been making! You know this is just the first step to greater things. So happy for you!

Angie, hope everything is well for you. Counting one's blessings is a good way to realize how much we DO have and puts life's challenges in perspective. At least for me it does!

Thanks for the congrats guys and gals! Only...the job was short-lived. :rotfl: Didn't sign a paper or work an hour there. :uhoh3: Too much drama going on BEFORE I even got started. So that meant RUUUUUUUUNNNNNN and don't look back! :rotfl:

Anyhoo....I went for another job today at a country club restaurant within walking distance from the house (20-30 minutes tops). Just think of the exercise I'll get with THAT job! :rotfl: At least now I won't have transportation problems! Nothing like the good feet the Good Lord blessed me with!

I'm a survivor due to my lifestyle of living like the gypsies live. I fit in wherever I happen to be, and make the best of every situation no matter what! I bend with the wind, and swim with every current, and rise above every obstacle life throws at me. Not in my strength, but because of God's Strength and Love living inside me holding me together. HE is the glue that keeps me from falling apart! Amen? Amen!!!

Praying for each one of you tonight...especially you Deb! Sweet dreams! snore.gif

Renee, sorry to hear about the job, but glad something else came up.

Arciedee, nice to hear from you.

I'm a little headachy again today. They seem to be worse lately. I'm wondering if my turning vegetarian and eating more grains that I'm allergic to or soy has anything to do with it? Or maybe it's MSG because I had Chinese food again last night because I was too lazy to cook, or the wheat in the Chinese noodles? I've eaten wheat my entire life and that shouldn't be it. I didn't have headaches until I moved to Florida. They come and go, I'm just in a bad spell now.

I'm going to the gym today and then going to be a slug.

Just happened to browse through and see this....and I just heard someone say the other day that, like allergies of any kind, wheat allergies can come on suddenly. Someone at work said their child had suddenly become allergic to it....and a friend of my daughter's suddenly discovered a new gluten allergy last year. The girl/woman is in her late 20's. The symptoms were GI though. I am convinced I am allergic to one of the honeys...not sure which one...and it gives me very bad headaches.

Cheerful, I am sorry about the 'hit and miss' job at the school, but it is probably for the best. Perhaps the country club will work out and that would be wonderful for you!

Tweety - yuck on the headaches, I have a very good friend who is having severe problems with a headache that won't go away and gets unbearable at night. I keep trying to get her to go to the Dr., but I am not having much luck. How long have you lived in FL? Perhaps there is an altitude difference from where you were before?

Arciedee - I would love to learn ballroom dancing, enjoy it! 5 lbs. is wonderful and your charisma is shining. ;)

Everybody, hope today and the weekend is going well for all of you. My munchkins are extremely sick now and there was much debate as to whether or not to put my little boy in the hospital last night. They decided to let him come home with a nebulizer and breathing treatments along with an antibiotic for an ear infection and steroids to help his lungs. My little girl also has an ear infection, but she just got the antibiotics with instructions to use the breathing treatments if they become necessary. They both have to go back for a check-up on Wednesday, but I have instructions to keep a close eye on them and go in right away if anything changes. Goodness I will be happy when it is summer and this stuff is out of the air!

Take care and don't worry if I'm not online for a while, gotta get my little ones well - they are top priority! :)
