Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....
Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)
QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?
I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....
Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????
Renee, that's the only way I've gained any wisdom or peace of mind, is the hard knocks way. :)
Deb, some weeks life just gets in the way of our workouts. I hope things calm down doown.
Sarah, that's awesome you adopted another dog. It must have been heartbreaking to see the dog so depressed. Both of my dogs were adopted but were more nervous than depressed when they arrived here. I can't imagine the grief after being with one owner for 8 years.
Steph, I can see adding the extra protein to the shredded wheat but extra fiber??
Thanks for the good food Renee. I had some five-grain whole grain oatmeal stuff and milk and protein powder, along with some kiwi. Today I'm having a veggie burger on whole grain bread with some leftover black beans and brown rice and veggies and fruit. Don't know what I'll do for supper tonight. I have some brussel sprouts I need to eat.
congratulations sasha! you've made our country proud! you are an all-around beautiful picture of health! :flowersfo:icon_hug:just check out that gorgeous smile as she stands on the podium beaming - holding up her silver medal! i saw her this morning on "the today show" being interviewed by katie couric. very sweet kid! she's 21 now, and won't commit just yet to the olympics four years from now. i'm so happy for her. she did our country proud! :smiley_aa
speaking of health....how's everyone doing today? it's cool outside this early morning. brrrrrrrrrr.... i'm only "up and at 'em" this early because i had to get dgs ready for school, and send him to the neighbors to catch their school bus by a little past seven. my dd had to work a twelve hour dayshift pedi home health case for the agency she just signed on with, so 'gramma' was on duty early this morning. the weather man predicts a rainy weekend forecast. i may go for my walk before the water starts pouring down. it already looks gray outside.
here's breakfast for ya....i'm having what i'm posting this morning, too.
a bowl of oatmeal -
small glass of orange juice -
that's it for me. i'm not much of an early morning eater.
I've been fairly healthy today. I went to the gym and did 40 minutes of aerobics, and lifted weights. Ate really good food. The only bad thing I did was buy these oatmeal chocolate chip cooks. They are soft, made from organic ingredients, not a lot of processed sugar (just natural juices, etc. enough to sweeten them). I figure at least the whole oats in them are healthy. A nice treat. :)
I was feeling tired and headachy today so I skipped yoga this morning. I took a good nap and am feeling much better and managed to get a few chores and some homework done.
I'm making spaghetti with Nates Meatless balls. They are a bit price, $4.00 for a bag, but the are soooo good, and much more healthier than the red meat variety. I also use them to make meatlessball subs.
I'm trying a new pasta. I love their breads, so I thought I would give it a try. " While many pastas are very high in carbohydrates and processed sugar, we've found a new line of pasta, Ezekiel 4:9, that is organic, high in protein and very flavorful! Fair warning. It's not white, tasteless pasta. It's brown in color and nutty in texture and flavor."

Tweety - I had to walk through the living room where my 4 year old has built a fort from all the couch pillows and then to the pantry to look up the cereal . . .
It is Post "Healthy Classics" Shredded Wheat 'n Bran, spoon size. Across the top of the box it says "Excellent source of Whole Grain".
It has 7 g of protein and 8 g (!!) of fiber per serving (1 1/4 cup).
Old people need bran . . ya know?

Everyone needs fiber, not just us old folks.
I read your post that you added the extra protein and fiber yourself in addition to the cereal (like protein powder and added bran or something).
I can't say the pasta was good. It come out gooey and cruny, so I rinsed it several times to get rid of the good and it wasn't bad. I tried cooking the rest some more for John so he wouldn't have crunch pasta and got online and forgot about it and over cooked it. He can have meatball sandwiches when he comes home. :)
I got a fair workout in the gym. Spouse says to me "make sure you're back by 10:30 because you're taking me to the airport". So I cut it short and come home so I can eat a good breakfast and it's 10:30 and he hasn't even finished packing, never mind taken a shower. I should have known better.
Hi guys! Hope the weekend was lovely.
I don't know about y'all, but I am really sick and tired of cold/flu season. My kiddos were both healthy for about a week - yesterday they both got sick again with high fevers. Michael, who is old enough to be able to tell me, complained about everything hurting - Monica just cried. Sigh - I am sooooo looking forward to summer.
On a happier note, I have decided to get back on track with the healthy eating. I have been pretty naughty lately and I need to get back in the groove. I could tell I was being bad because my tummy is not happy, so time to give it some nourishing stuff. The meatless meatballs sound good Tweety, maybe I'll see if I can find them around here. I really need to find some lean meats that I can eat - I love turkey, but not every night and I am allergic to all types of fish, so that doesn't work. Phooey. Anybody have any ideas?
Hi Sarah! Good luck with the return to healthy eating. There are some lean pork and beef products out there. I've found the lean pork and beef you have to marinade to make them taste better. There also is extra-lean ground beef out there that you can broil to keep it lean.
I have to work a few hours today, but I hope to go to yoga class tonight.
I've been eating too much processed food lately with John being out of town so much. Things like veggie burritoes, etc. They aren't all that bad, but full of sodium and probably other stuff. I need to do more cooking for one and stop eating so many convience foods.
