Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Thanks Jess. I do feel better today. :) I hope you're right about the test - it just seems that there are a lot of smart people who have had trouble with it, so I'm concerned. I really was ok though until I found this stupid spot on my leg, that's what did it. I think it only bugs me so much because cancer runs rampid on both sides of my family, so once I get it looked at tomorrow, I will feel much better. I am really hoping my Doc will tell me I'm just being an idiot and it's a funny colored mole :chuckle

Yes - I have applied to the program at the Junior College closest to my home (50 miles away), so I am excited about that. Sound like the wait-list is going to be about a year from when I finish pre-reqs (that's this semester - yeay) so I will work on classes that will apply towards my BSN while I'm waiting.

I know you're having a rough go in your class - I talked to a friend who is one semester away from graduating as a RN. She had seriously contemplated quitting through her entire LPN year and was afraid she wasn't cut out for it because she wasn't enjoying it like she thought she would - she thought she had made a huge mistake. However, when she got to her second year, she absolutely loved it and is having a blast. You keep hanging in there, I know you will do just fine. ;)

Thanks again!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. You are smart to do the BSN req's while you wait.

I will be praying for that spot to be a mole or better yet a birthmark!

Hi everyone... wow, lots of posts to catch up on since Friday! Hit a bit of a workout slump for a couple days. Was planning to do a DVD on Saturday, but didn't. Then figured I'd do it Sunday, but again, didn't. Was going to do it yesterday morning, but other stuff came up. But last night I got home from visiting my mom, FH wasn't home yet, so I popped it in and got it done! Was tired and shaky, but not as much as when I did it last week. So I know that I'm gaining some strength. And in just the three workouts I managed this week I feel that things are shifting, lifting, getting more defined. The scale this morning wasn't great, but was about 2.5 lbs below last week's high. Feels good to be taking care of myself!

Sarah, so sorry to hear about the spot you found. I can understand why you are so upset. I do hope that your meeting with your doc tomorrow will give you the info you need. Congrats on the weight loss, by the way. I didn't realize how much you had lost! That's terrific! My micro class starts on Saturday, I'll let you know how it goes.

Jess, good luck with the food plan. I generally don't like diets, but see how they can help to kick off a weight loss plan. Especially when you are busy I'm sure it helps to have a "menu."

Tweety, congrats on the weight loss! You've been doing great! I've got about 6 lbs. to go myself.

Deb, you've got some good motivation there with your DH's retirement. And lots of cheerleaders here on this thread! You'll do great, I'm sure.

I apologize to anyone I did not directly address. Must get back to work here. Will check in again soon!

Hi everyone, I was so busy with work and school last week that I didn't end up posting too much.

I ended up dropping my CNA class after talking to some of the Techs in my local ER. My boyfriend slipped a disc and we ended up in the ER about all night on Thursday. Anyway, to make a long story short I need to be an EMT to work in the ER so I dropped the CNA class and added Yoga back into my schedule for this semester. I plan to take the EMT course this summer, that way i can get a job in the ER while I finish with my nursing program.

I was so bad all last week, I didn't get any exercise at all and I ate horribly :imbar but..........

I just got back from my first (ever) Yoga class, it about kicked my butt:chuckle, at least now I have to get some exercise though. I can't make excuses not to show up for class, it would affect my GPA. That's pretty good discipline huh?

I had a nice healthy salad for lunch, so I'm off to a good start this week.

I hope everyone has a great day, I'll catch up with you all tonight. I have to go to work.

Michelle, sorry you dropped the CNA class. Though if you really want to work the ER, I guess it makes sense. And great that you could add the yoga class back in! Enforced exercise always helps (I took dance for 4 semesters of college, so I know how that GPA can be a motivating factor!). Let us know how it goes for you! Sounds like you've got a running start on the week! Congrats!

Everybody sounds like they're doing so well today.

I went to my first weigh-in and lost 1.6 pounds. Considering that I overate at the Olive Garden and didn't stick quite so well all week to my eating plan, I was just happy I didn't gain anything.

I don't think I'd go for the rice diet either. I guess I want to lose weight on a way of eating that I can do the rest of my life. I'm tired of doing diets that you lose weight but don't offer a realistic life-long way to eat.

:) Thanks everybody! :)

Kat - I agree with you. I can never keep the weight off with a jump-start diet, it seems like I get the jump-start done ok, but then I gain it all back. I am one who has to do a lifelong thing myself. ;)

Arciedee - yes, let me know how the class goes, mine starts Monday, so I will be anxious about that as well! BTW - thanks for the weight-loss comment, I have been working hard on it since I think somewhere in August or so. It is paying off, but I have been in a slump here lately. Hopefully will get on the downhill slope again soon.

Michelle - sorry to hear about the CNA class, but perhaps the Yoga will be good for some relaxation of the brain. :)

Jess - thanks for thinking of me, I appreciate that!!!

Tweets, Deb, Cheerful and everybody I have missed - have a good one. I will be off tomorrow, but check back in Thursday morning to see how everybody is doing! :D

Take care all!!!

Michelle, so you picked up Yoga again that is good. I have never tried it and my school does not offer it. I would love to though,

Good luck

Michelle, I hope you stick with the yoga. It gets better with each class.

Kat, kudos on the weight loss. Slow and steady weight loss will last. Good luck.

Good luck everyone in their endeavors.

Sarah, I think it's only natural to kind of hit a slump after a while. The excitement gradually fades and now it just feels like WORK! But remember that going back to the old habits will only put you back where you started and certainly won't help your mental or physical health. Sounds like it's time for some sort of shake up to get you excited again, whether it's finding an exercise routine or making a change to your eating patterns or whatever. You've done great so far and I know you'll continue to do well.

Kat, congrats on the weight loss! That's great! Don't focus on the "bad" moments, focus on how well you did this week! I agree with you on the diet thing... they're tempting, but I prefer to eat in a way that can be healthily maintained over the long haul. Change in habits rather than riding a roller coaster. Or something like that.

Oops, time to leave! Have a good evening, all!

popping in to say goodnight all! haven't been on the 'puter much at all today, but hopefully tomorrow i can come chat with everyone. :)

jess and michelle.........no rice diet food emailed to me yet by dd#3, but she's been busy with a sick two year old, etc. i haven't forgot about you two, and will keep bugging dd for the meals and all. :D

tweety is right though about the rice diet needing to be medically supervised long term, and how short term it's good for detoxing and cleansing the body, etc. listen to him gals! :) dd was only on the rice diet one week...lost almost nine pounds, but was too weak too stay on it another week, so she's back to doing the ww plan. i'm glad she was wise enough to know when to call it quits. :)

I agree too Renee. I am doing it just this week and eating healthy from now on. I need to lose the lbs I gained during the holidays.........lol

I am on day 3 of the rice diet. I don't feel weak, just a bit hungry for meat. Not sure I could ever become a vegetarian. I love chicken too much............hehe

I will weigh myself on Friday or Saturday...........

Tweety speaks VERY wise words. The general rule when "dieting" is "DON'T"

eat a colorful and varied diet of fruits, veggies and lean proteins, and you won't need medical supervision OR multivitamins. Tweety has some great smoothie recipes he uses, if he cares to share.....

forget the rice diet

the no food diet

the atkins diet

the 3 day "cleanse"

whatever

just eat what you KNOW is good for you

and live to 97 to terrorize others like my grandma did. rofl.

Ok off my soapbox and off to take MY OWN ADVICE.
