Greetings. Deb is going to put a sticky on this thread and eventually delete the other.
This is the thread where members come to share their journey to wellness and wholeness.
It's a holistic thread, talking about all apects of health, not just diet and exercise, but the mind and spirit as well. Hello all :)
Wow - so much to catch up on here! It's so inspiring to read about everyone's successes.
To those working on quitting smoking I hope you keep it up. I went through a phase in college where I smoked while out partying - I must say, I was suprised at how hard it was to break the habit of smoking with a beer/wine/drink. I can't fathom the will power it must take to quit when it's more a part of daily activity and routine. You all have my admiration.
I've been in a slump with diet and exercise the past two weeks and it will continue next week until my class is over. The 9am - 11pm is killing my routine (this week it's 7a-11p Tues & Wed - ouch!). I've at least managed to exercise each weekend, though I had to settle for the ellipse today due to weather. I'm hoping to either run or hit the bike trails tomorrow (if mother nature cooperates).
Well, I'm off to do errands now and schoolwork/housework. I am going out to dinner tonight - typically that's when I splurge since I do it so rarely but with how I feel, I may have to play it conservative.
I hope you all have a great day and weekend.
cheers!

(forgive me for those who have heard this ad infinitum) --
So far I have 6 MONTHS + not smoking, yayyy! 30 years of smoking. I did quit for 4 1/2 yrs once, and 9 mos, and 1 year, I have heard it said that the secret of quitting smoking is just to keep trying - so - anyway - I hardly have cravings. But often when I finish something (a task, a meal, etc) that is when it occurs to me and I feel sad when I say "you don't smoke anymore Kat!"
My spiritual connection helped me the most to quit- asking for willingness to be willing to quit - (yes that sounds wacky but I just didn't WANT to quit! so I asked God to "make me" want to...)
I hear you re the 10-12 hour shifs, altho it was so wonderful to have the extra time off I spent it like a beached whale, in front of the TV or in bed. Friends couldn't get me out of the house, etc, and I sure didn't feel like catching up with housework or paying bills or etc.
ANYhow - weight and food are a constant battle. When I avoid the sugar/flour cycle I don't crave tons of food, and the weight comes right off (sort of the principle behind Atkins and South Beach).
I have been fighting fat since I was in my young teens, when a brother said I looked fat (I was only 110 probably but what I was was short and well endowed!) Unfortunately that comment went in deep, so I have always thought I was fat. Now however I am 50 lb overweight and I feel like an idiot - I attribute some of that to not smoking/drinking/dating (LOL) - but it hurts my self-esteem anyway. And the usual excuses for not taking care of myself apply...
Well anyway - :trout: (hmmm, shall I have fish today? A little subliminal message lol - good thing I didn't post the MONKEY!)
xoxo
Uhhh - is this supposed to happen?
I didn't run yesterday. My mistake - no excuses.
So today, I did the routine again --- 6 minute run, 6 minute walk, 6 minute run, 6 minute walk, 6 minute run, 6 minute walk. Total of 36 minutes.
By minute 28-32 My right foot went numb. I could feel a slight tingling, buzzing - but it was mostly numb. Kinda like how sometimes your limb "goes to sleep" yeah?
Something like that. Not the same.
I was freaking out - but I didn't stop. I finished the exercise. Sat down. Gulped down water. In less than 2 minutes, my foot was fine and I completed my shoulder weight lifting exercises.
I don't know what casued it. I've marched and run miles before - when I was a cadet soldier and also when I did 4 years of karate. Though we were often pushed to extremes and beyond, this has never happened to me before.
I was freaking out that my legs wern't getting enough O2, that I must have something "blocking" circulation. Blah blah blah....
Anyone experience stuff like this before?

How are you now, Roy! I can't imagine it lasting for that long, but I am not a runner.
By the way I noticed the Pink Floyd quote... David Gilmour of Pink Floyd has an album called "On an Island" which is pretty cool (2006). There WAS a promo video back when I bought it on Amazon.com (a year ago?) with a tour of his houseboat (which he made into a studio) on the Thames - and showed how the video/album was made, who was on it, etc. Wish I could find the promo video again for ya but ... then again you may just like those lyrics, LOL!
FEEL BETTER!
Just checked my wieght - I think I dropped 2 pounds
it didn't last long at all - as soon as I got done with the run, I sat down and within 2 minutes it went away. How are you now, Roy! I can't imagine it lasting for that long, but I am not a runner.
Thanks. Maybe the guys at my Pink Floyd forum would know...By the way I noticed the Pink Floyd quote... David Gilmour of Pink Floyd has an album called "On an Island" which is pretty cool (2006). Maybe that numb feeling was your body releasing those 2 pounds, LOL!
Man, I realized after I posted that I said the houseboat was in "Nice" when it was actually on the river Thames LOL - ah but the brave and stalwart Roy had already "quoted" my error! o well.... :imbar LOL
Wow - you guys are busy! Sorry, I didn't have time to read everybody's - at work and only have a few minutes today (it's crazy around here for some reason) - so HI EVERYBODY!!!!
Yesterday I had some fresh fruit and a bagel for breakfast, then a muffin for a snack and a southwestern turkey wrap for lunch, then I had a small bean burrito for supper and two bites of a taco. Hmm - I don't know that any of that was healthy (except the fruit), but I guess it wasn't too bad. Feeling a little yucky today, so maybe I'll try something different today.
Been having 'female issues' here lately - really bad this month, so called an OB/GYN and made an appt. and the soonest they could get me in is Oct 9th! Yikes!!! I took it and will hope things don't get worse before then. Good grief!
Anyway, enough of my ramblings - have a happy and healthy day y'all!
I just finished a really good book called "YOU--The Owner's Manual" by Michael Roizen, MD and Mehmet Oz, MD. I highly recommend it. I also discovered that they have a website in which you can calculate your "real age". Very interesting. They take your chrolological age and factor in your medical hx, lifestyle habits (nutrition, exercise, smoking, drinking....), and then make suggestions for improvements. http://www.realage.com/ The site is full of sensible and practical nutrition/fittness advice as well as information on a number of medical conditions. Also includes many interactive quizzes.

Is it something that SHOULD wait til Oct? if not you could do a walk in clinic or something? or be on a cancellation list at your Drs?
I remember having abnormal cells on my cervix and having to wait 3 months for a procedure - and not being able to know what the cells were til the procedure - man was I scared and I thought, "WHY do I have to wait so long???"
So anyway, making a short story long, hope all is well...
xoxo Sarah!

I remember going to the site (I think I was still smoking) and I was in my 60's "realage" wise - actually 47 - now I am 50 lb overweight but quit smoking! Wonder what that does to my "real"age!~
Congrats on the sixs month's Zoe!
Hi Miss Calc! I'll have to look up that book. I also recommend doing the real age. I did it last year. I was pleasantly surprised by my real age was 7 years less, but it made a recommendation or two that was off the mark, but no biggie.
Hi Sarah, sorry about your health issues. Good luck with that.
Hi RN2, keep up the good work! I know all about those "slumps".
Roy, keep on pumping!
I'm off to yoga class now!
