Healthcare/dental plans for nurses

Published

I'm planning on having some orthodontic work done, and I was wondering for all you nurses if your healthcare covers a percentage of orthodontic treatments? I'll be an RN in 2015, so if the healthcare plan covers a portion of orthodontia, ill wait to have it done. If not and ill be paying out of pocket either way, then I'm going to get it done sooner rather than later.

Anyone have input/info on this?

Very few dental plans cover orthodontics for adults.

....and then there are employers who do not offer dental plans, period.

I have a $100 deductible for my family. 50% coverage for orthodontics and crowns, 80% coverage for all other work.

I can tag team it with the husbands dental plan. There is a yearly cap but I've never hit it.

I only took a permanent line to get the dental plan. lol

Most of the dental plans that I have had were great for routine xrays, check-ups, and cleaning. Other than that, they didn't help much with the cost of dental care. I have found that the dentist always does "something more" for "more money." Such as, one dentist charged me an extra $360 for what he called "deep cleaning," on top of what my plan paid for a "routine cleaning." I think it was totally unnecessary, as I have never had a problem with tartar, gingivitis, or anything.

I have not had employer-sponsored insurance for more than three years...

I do have a dental plan which is not through my job, but was purchased on the open market. I believe it covers 50 percent of orthodontic treatments up to a $1,000 maximum annually.

My hospital sponsored dental plan including orthodontic work up to a maximum of $2000.

This varies widely by employer so I don't really think any of us on here can properly advise you as to what your future dental plan may or may not cover. Note that this is separate dental insurance, health insurance plans rarely cover dental work and if they do it is very limited. My current health insurance, for example, includes one annual cleaning but nothing else.

Our insurance has a $1000 per year cap on orthodontia. Each time the kids have gotten braces, I've paid for the rest out of our medical savings account. And since we paid in full before application of braces, we received a 15% discount on the total bill.
