Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Tweety, thanks for your sympathy. My attitude has been frustrating me a lot lately. I mean, aren't girls supposed to dream of their wedding day from the time they're little? And here's me counting down the days until it's over... and we haven't even picked a date yet!!! I WANT to be excited. Instead I'm feeling ornery and resentful. So will have to figure out how we do this without me being entirely stressed and grouchy for the next six months. Of course part of me realizes that I'm just going to have to stop being childish about some of this. I don't like being the center of attention, I used to burst into tears when people sang "Happy Birthday" to me... but I'm not 6 anymore and I know how to handle these things with far more grace than I have been demonstrating.

Deb, please don't be mad at yourself! The more you say things like "I disgust myself" the more you will hurt. You're going through a stressful time and it's somewhat inevitable that with everything going on you won't maintain perfection in each part of your life. You went to Curves, which is great. You did do something to take care of yourself and you should be proud of that at least.

Must run to catch my bus... be back tomorrow!

meg - glad to have you posting on the "healthy" thread! :icon_hug:

tweety - happy vegging to you! will you still eat fish or poultry?

deb - good for you for making it to curves! stop beating yourself up, and start speaking positive words whether you "feel" the words or not. :flowersfo :icon_hug:

arcie - suggestion: chuck the whole wedding and elope. or...invite all your family & friends to your favorite restaurant for dinner, and surprise them with your "i do's". :clown:

meg - glad to have you posting on the "healthy" thread! :icon_hug:

meg - the way you eat is common to most teens. healthier food choices added to your young taste will balance out what you eat. just don't go on any starvation diets, ok? :)

i won't i promise. first of all they are dumb. second of all i love food to much. :chuckle i think my doc was afraid of that because when i asked her about my weight she was like "dont worry you wont loose that much weight even if you try."

Deb, I know exactly how you feel. You'll get back in the swing of things. We all go off the track of healthy living, God knows I do.

Arciedee, weddings are a stressful time. You're just being honest. Don't feel bad because you think your supposed to feel one way or the other.

Renee, no I will not eat poultry or fish. No animal flesh. But I will eat eggs and dairy, primarily in the form or organic eggs and low fat cottage cheese and yogurt, with some skim milk every now and then. I do have a lot of salmon in my freezer, so I'm torn about what to do with that because John doesn't eat fish. So I may be one of those pesco-vegetarians until that is gone.

Hi Meg. Don't forget to get some exercise. Ok?

I did manage to go to the gym today.

Renee, we've discussed the eloping thing... but then one or the other of us starts feeling guilty about not including certain people. We also considered the "surprise" wedding. Inviting people for an engagement party or something and then, oh look, we're exchanging vows. But as a lot of our close friends live far away we worried that they might not come if they thought it was just a party. So... sticking to the traditional route :specs:

Meg, good to have you posting! I think your goal should be making healthy choices, not losing weight at this point. I'm not sure what your medical limitations are, but healthy foods, exercise, a positive outlook... those should be your goals. Look forward to hearing more from you.

Tweety, thanks. I'm actually feeling better about things now that I have admitted to myself what was bothering me. And I realize that playing the martyr -- thinking, I'm just doing this for everyone else anyway -- is going to make the next few months that much worse. Part of my issue is priding myself on my cynical nature. And wedding excitement so goes against my cynical nature  But you know what, I've been excited about friends' weddings... I should most certainly enjoy my own! It's a process, but I think I'm getting a better perspective on this.

Good job w/ the gym, Tweety. I got a workout in last night. Yet the stupid scale was up a lb. today. Grr.

hi arcie - tradition tradition tradition, right? :chuckle you'll get through it somehow. brides always do. hang in there, and be encouraged! :icon_hug:

about "the scale" (sounds eerie doesn't it?) :uhoh21: i used to be so obsessed with "the scale" that i weighed myself constantly before and after workouts. that was like 15 to 20 years ago. then one day, i threw out the scale, and vowed not to buy another one..........i haven't to this day. :chuckle if i look at myself in the mirror, and don't like what i see...i know i need a fitness program. that is now my scale. being obsessed with numbers on a scale is not a good thing. how one feels about themselves or likes how they look should dictate what they do to change their body image. a scale just reflects someone's idea of what i should or shouldn't weigh based on what???? no scientific rhyme or reason should reduce me to "a certain number on a scale" because our body make up is all individual. :specs:

bbl. time for my first meal of the day. i am bad about feeding myself in the mornings, so am working on changing that. moving up breakfast from eleven in the morning until nine in the morning. yes, it's hard work for me to do since i don't feel like eating most days. i'm trying to nurse myself to wellness according to what feels right for me........not based on someone else's theory of what i should look like, or how i should eat. i do agree breakfast is essential over and above any other meal of the day to break the overnight fast...thus, calling it "break - fast". :nurse:

Guess I'm going to half to talk to myself.

I'm off diet today. I had Gardenburger Veggie wraps that are good. And I'm going to have some Godiva ice. Just a treat, I'm not going off the deep end............I hope.
