Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Hey Jess, is this the rice diet that says you're to eat no salt and just fruit and rice for the first couple of weeks?

Where's the protein?

Yeah, it's the one. The protein you need is in the rice. :)

Gah. I couldn't do it.

Best of luck to you, though.

Brown rice=excellent source of protein...

I need to get serious. I want to drop a few inches/pounds by May when dh retires. I can't go looking like a duffel bag when he has his big day.

Hope it's a good day for everyone.

OK, so I suppose I wasn't paying much attention in Nutrition class. :imbar

Is this protein from rice a complete protein?

Brown rice is an incomplete protein. Meaning it does not have all the essential amino acids, but usually we eat enough other foods to compliment and meeting our protein needs is easy. However, I would hardly call brown rice an excellent source of protein. The bag I have states 3 g of protein per serving (and that's incomplete protein at that). Now add some beans to it and you have excellent protein. Americans have no trouble with getting enough protein.

Starvation diets like the Rice diet that include rice and veggies are good for cleansing and detoxing and loosing weight quickly because it's low calories and has a lot of antioxidants.

It's not for long term use, and it's usually reserved for the morbidly obese under a doctor's supervision.

I know me and I would be too hungry on that diet and I don't do hunger well, especially when I'm actively working out.

Good luck Deb, sometimes have an event to plan for is a good motivator.

What's the matter hon? Don't let the test get to you, I am sure you will do better than you even think! Have you applied to any program yet?

Thanks Jess. I do feel better today. :) I hope you're right about the test - it just seems that there are a lot of smart people who have had trouble with it, so I'm concerned. I really was ok though until I found this stupid spot on my leg, that's what did it. I think it only bugs me so much because cancer runs rampid on both sides of my family, so once I get it looked at tomorrow, I will feel much better. I am really hoping my Doc will tell me I'm just being an idiot and it's a funny colored mole :chuckle

Yes - I have applied to the program at the Junior College closest to my home (50 miles away), so I am excited about that. Sound like the wait-list is going to be about a year from when I finish pre-reqs (that's this semester - yeay) so I will work on classes that will apply towards my BSN while I'm waiting.

I know you're having a rough go in your class - I talked to a friend who is one semester away from graduating as a RN. She had seriously contemplated quitting through her entire LPN year and was afraid she wasn't cut out for it because she wasn't enjoying it like she thought she would - she thought she had made a huge mistake. However, when she got to her second year, she absolutely loved it and is having a blast. You keep hanging in there, I know you will do just fine. ;)

Thanks again!

Sounds like that rice diet is being highly contemplated by y'all. I wish everybody whose giving it a whirl the best of luck with it - there's no way I would have that much will-power!

I hope all of you have a happy Jan. 17th. Thanks for all the uplifting posts yesterday, I really needed them - more than any of you could know! ;) :) :D
