Hi Everyone,
I haven't been accepted into a program yet (just did all my applications), but I thought that this forum would be the best place to ask, since you're all in nursing school already.
My school requires that we have health insurance and some kind of Liability Insurance, and I'm clueless as to how I'm going to be able to pay for it. I had to move back home in order to go back to school, and I'm currently unemployed (won't be working when I start nursing school).
The last time I had health insurance was about 10 years ago, and I was paying almost $300 a month. I hurt my knee, and after some time I dropped the insurance because it got too expensive. Low and behold, 2 years later I went to apply for insurance and I couldn't get insured. My knee is fine, btw - and I have no health issues/nonsmoker.
Assuming that I will be able to get insurance now - are there "basic" plans that are cheaper? Is there anyone out there willing to share what they are currently paying? Does your school offer some kind of group rate? Even $100 is a lot to me, but I'm hoping that I can use grant money to help pay for it. I live in California. I'll probably find out more after I attend my nursing seminar in 2 weeks, I'm just feeling a little anxious about this right now! It's totally stressing me out & I'm worried that lack of funds might prevent me from attending. Any advice/guidance is very much appreciated! :)
By January first you will have to have health insurance anyway, school or no. And they won't be able to deny you because of any pre-existing conditions, either. If you are

You dont have to have insurance by January first anymore. They pushed this back until 2015. They are hoping that when another president comes into office by that time they can throw that out all together, so thats why congress pushed the date back to 2015.

False. The House voted to delay the individual mandate; however, there is no way that the Senate will vote the same way and, even if it did, why wouldn't Obama veto it? The next president will not assume office until 2017, so pushing the date back to 2015 isn't going to do anything. That and Hillary's going to be the next President and she was pushing for more than what the ACA mandates twenty years ago. The date for the employer mandate is what has been pushed back to 2015.

I guess what I meant to say is that thy are trying to push it back as much as they can until we do get another president in office (i.e. republican) to not force the american people to have to buy health insurance. Im not saying Im for one political party or the other, but I am not for my government telling me what I can not do or otherwise be penalized for. I already pay taxes for that! So for now they are just trying to delay it as long as possible. If that means they have o push it back for a year, every year then fine. I think its bull for someone to tell me I have to buy insurance whether it be a school or the government. I feel the sane way about car insurance too. Its all a scam.
I know your question is mainly regarding health insurance, but I wanted to add something about Liability Insurance. I am filling out an application from NSO (in my state it comes out to $37 per year, which seems cheap compared to everything else I've spent on nursing school). My school technically provides liability insurance for me, but I'm of the opinion that, in the end, the school is going to look out for its own best interests and not mine. Personally, I think it is great that you are required to get liability insurance on your own. I've read several topics about insurance here on allnurses, and most seem to go with NSO.
I hope you can find some affordable health insurance!
Thanks for the replies everyone - your input has been VERY helpful! I moved up to an earlier date for my school's nursing seminar, so I'll know more about my options this coming week. I'm REALLY hoping that they'll offer something through the school - that way I can pay for it with FA. We'll see....crossing my fingers!

The government tells you what you can and cannot do all the time. That's what all laws are. They tell you that you cannot drive faster than the speed limit or else you will be fined. They tell you that you cannot park your car in certain areas and if you do, they will move it and then you will have to pay them to get it back. They tell you that you cannot kill someone or else you will go to jail.
The government has a vested interest in guaranteeing that its citizens have health insurance. Because who do you think ends up footing the bill when all these uninsured people show up at the ER?

Not true, it's the employer mandate that got pushed back. Individuals still have to enroll by January 1, 2014.
My advice stands.
Well, here's my update:
It looks like I'll have to find and pay for private health insurance because my school doesn't offer any options. In fact, it looks like there will be a lot of fees that will not be integrated into my tuition costs. I assumed that I'd have to cover some things on my own, but the $2,600 orientation fee is going to kill me. I guess the fee covers ati materials and uniforms/equipment. Geez.
I have to get Liability Insurance, cpr certification, a background/drug screen, physical and vaccinations/titers, textbooks, and God only knows what else. What are clinical fees? We have to pay for those too. I am a little surprised by all of the added costs, as I attend a private university (full accred/non-profit). Of course, this is all assuming that I get into the program.
The (sort of) good news I have is that Health Net and Anthem have some basic, high deductible/high copay policies available for around $100-$140. I haven't looked into the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) yet, but I did read that the house just passed a bill 230-189 to defund it. It seems like it's not set in stone yet.
Thanks for all of the feedback everyone! Where there's a will, there's a way.

Yes and this is about the 40th attempt House Republicans have made to kill the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The House cannot act alone and it doesn't have the power to defund a bill. Once they vote on something it must go to the Senate (which the Democrats control and which will not vote the same way) and then to the President for signature. Assuming that this did pass the Senate (which it won't), Obama would undoubtedly veto it as this is his baby and even the House doesn't have the 2/3 majority it needs to override the Presidential veto.
