Health Insurance for nursing school?

Published

Hi Everyone,

I haven't been accepted into a program yet (just did all my applications), but I thought that this forum would be the best place to ask, since you're all in nursing school already.

My school requires that we have health insurance and some kind of , and I'm clueless as to how I'm going to be able to pay for it. I had to move back home in order to go back to school, and I'm currently unemployed (won't be working when I start nursing school).

The last time I had health insurance was about 10 years ago, and I was paying almost $300 a month. I hurt my knee, and after some time I dropped the insurance because it got too expensive. Low and behold, 2 years later I went to apply for insurance and I couldn't get insured. My knee is fine, btw - and I have no health issues/nonsmoker.

Assuming that I will be able to get insurance now - are there "basic" plans that are cheaper? Is there anyone out there willing to share what they are currently paying? Does your school offer some kind of group rate? Even $100 is a lot to me, but I'm hoping that I can use grant money to help pay for it. I live in California. I'll probably find out more after I attend my nursing seminar in 2 weeks, I'm just feeling a little anxious about this right now! It's totally stressing me out & I'm worried that lack of funds might prevent me from attending. Any advice/guidance is very much appreciated! :)

I'm gonna need health insurance eventually because when I start nursing school I'll be 26 & won't be able to stay on my parent's insurance any more. I hope I can find a plan that is affordable because I have a hx of epilepsy & was recently dx with MDD. I guess I'll find out soon! Yikes. >.

I am about to enter the 3rd semester of the nursing program @ my school here in Florida and just today they email us informing us that we are required to have personal health insurance before we start class in August. How can that be okay to do? I work only one day a week and make $400/month. How am I supposed to be able to afford health insurance? We also have to re-do our background checks and finger prints. Why? Finger prints don't change that much in a year, do they? I'm so annoyed and feel let down my school. We are charged for insurance in the nursing program package. I guess that's not enough. Sorry for the rant, I'm just frustrated and concerned as to how I'm supposed to obtain health insurance.

I think if my school in going to drop a bomb on us students in the 3rd semester like this, they should've had some options for us as far as cheap health plans go. Something. This is another MAJOR cost I did not plan for nor can I afford. I make a whopping $400/month working one day/week. I can't work more than that and manage my honor roll grades that I've kept for the last 3 years!!
