My 15 mos. old has welts all over his face and neck from mosquitoes...I've been putting hydrocortisone cream on them...but I have never seen the likes! My pedi said whenever he is out to put insect repellent on him, but this was just walking to the mailbox the other evening and he had on long sleeves and jeans...I never gave a thought to his face! He even got one in his ear...they don't seem to be itching him...I've yet to see him scratch at them, but geez! My poor baby!
Blessings, Michelle
The province of Manitoba, my former home, has some of the biggest and most vicious mosquitoes in the world. My son is allergic to mosquito bites secondary to immune system suppression first for treatment of histiocytosis then maintenance of his liver transplant. He was a study subject in a research project as a child; Dr Estelle Simons examined the incidence of mosquito allergy symptoms in children undergoing chemotherapy for malignancies and he met criteria for the treatment group. He took cetirazine from early May until late September each year until we left Manitoba for drier parts. He has outgrown his symptoms now.

I'm pretty allergic to most bug bites. I've done medrol dosepaks for bug bites before, and when I was little once my grandma took me to the ER over a presumably black fly bite as my face and neck was so swollen I couldn't open my eyes or mouth.
What I never got is how do you know what type of insect is guilty?
There are purified insect venom allergy tests available for a wide variety of biters and stingers. Dr Simons and her team developed a recombinant mosquito venom for use in allergy testing about 3 years ago. Bee, wasp and yellow jacket venom have been available for many years. In some ways it's a process of elimination.

I'm also a nursing student...but this is basics of immune physiology-- shouldn't we all know this?
Yeah but I don't use them often. Only when talking at school to my instructors, or with my classmates studying for a test. I didn't say I didn't know what they mean, I was just impressed with your use of them. Way to take a compliment.

Sorry-- one of my pet peeves is the dumbing down of nursing. I see it in my own class when people don't remember even rudimentary concepts from A&P.
